I'm ambivalent on Idris Elba, sometimes very good, equally as often just seems to play himself.
Exactly.
I once saw him in a film called Sometimes in April (about the Rwanda massacre) and I thought he was a superb actor. (good film btw) and eagerly watched out for his inevitable rise to fame. Since then I have only seen him play Idris Elba in everything he does.
There is a bit more to it in BeastONN but I didn't see the 'Oscar contending performance' that I saw on a few reviews.

Another vote for Bite of the Conchords.

Up to series 3 of Luther, I missed it the first time around. It's better than your average cop show. , though I can see where it annoys some people.

Worth the watch for Ruth Wilson's character alone.

The Assets on US Netflix.

If you like espionage related books, tv and film, especially cold war related stories, then this will be up your street. It is based on true events and centres around a CIA mole/double-agent and the team assigned to catch him.

I read that the show was cancelled prematurely but don't take heed of things like that. In the US good shows probably get cancelled because the ratings aren't as high as CSI and Strictly Kardashian.

I watched this the other night. Beautiful film and very well put together. It captures the chaos occurring with realism thrust into your face.

It feels like what Black Hawk Down and American Sniper attempted to portray.

I've got today off work so been making good(ish) use of it....

So far I've watched the whole of the wrong mans which was excellent-especially towards the end!

I've also watched we could be king-an amazing documentary about high school football in the US and Blackfish. Blackfish in particular is excellent-and quite hard to watch at times!

Did you watch it? (Beast of no nation)
I cant really decide what I thought. I enjoyed the film but despite other reviews I didn't particularly like Idris Elba in it. Not necessarily because he was a celeb, I just didn't think he was particularly good as an actor and lacked the combination of charisma and psycho the role required.
Not sure. I felt I should have liked it much more than I actually did. 6.5/10 perhaps
Just watched it and ... I think you've hit the nail on the head, though I'd probably give it a 7.

It was more brutal then i expected, but somehow it was a little too clean, literally. Their uniforms were really clean!

The kids were brilliant, but yeah I agree that Elba didn't quite have enough nastiness. Maybe more accurately, i know more about him in real life and that he's a nice bloke, so that overshadows the role. I also think it dwelled more on that character at the expense of the others.

Good film though, brought back memories of Angola and Mozambique news reports and put them in much more focus now I'm an adult.

"Everything Must Go" very watchable film starring Will Ferrell, and unusually for him, it's not a comedy.

So what do people make of the new t&c's then?

Do you reckon they'll cancel accounts if you circumvent the controls or is it a move to appease the studios?

"What Maisy Knew". Very good film and good acting from all concerned, especially Julianne Moore.

Kajaki; a film based on a true story from Afghanistan in 2006.

A British army patrol get stuck in an a long forgotten Soviet era minefield, with obvious results; grippy, gruesome, superbly acted, a must see.

Brilliant portrayal of a mission gone wrong, critical decision making where injury was inevitable, and above all else gallantry of the highest order. Proud to have served Utrinque Paratus.

Moves are being made to create a film from the book 3 days in June by James O' Connell, about 3 Para on Mount Longdon. Hope it gets the backing, it's a great read.

Closed Circuit

Eric Bana plays a barrister tasked with defending a man accused of organising a terrorist attack in London's Borough Market but with other parties involved including the Government.

Good watch. Lots of twists.

I also watched Parallels. This is about a building that when you enter shifts to an alternative Earth. 5/10 - Felt like a TV show crammed into a 90 min movie. Way too much going on!

I gather you don't care for Will Ferrell's films? And yet you think I'm the one that doesn't have a sense of humour?

Have you not seen Talladega Nights (for instance)? How could you possibly not find most of that funny?

In my case it's probably because I'm on Netflix Germany, Paddy.

I can hardly find any of the stuff that Netflix UK users post about. frown

But that Point & Shoot really is worth searching for. yes
