Smallville was my thought as well.
Batman's villains as kids for kids...ffs.
I dont get that impression at all, from the trailer i see it more as batman without the superhero with all his gadgets and money, just one man trying to make a difference, whilst also taking the time to build up more of a back story to the characters in the nolan trilogy.

I enjoyed it, some clever nods to the past, and nuggets for the nerdiest fans, and a pleasant hour's viewing for the rest of us.
Surprisingly, there are more shades of grey than I'd expected, it's more nuanced than the likes of Smallville or Caprica.
There's a lot they can do without any super-stuff, and it would be all the better for it.

Harlequin dancers and a comedian in the club? Zsasz in the police station? Ed Nygma in the forensics lab?
Falcone appears to be more than the "Italian Mob Boss #1" stereotype.
And Sean Pertwee as the arse kicking Alfred made my evening.

I've recognised a few from the trailer...I think that is a particularly st idea.
Whereas we thought it was an inspired idea, showing how they were all integrated in their original lives, how their lives changed them into who they become, their 'back story'.

Just watched the pilot over lunch. It was.... alright.

It's very Smallville/Arrow/Agents of Shield in tone and feel. It remains to be seen if it turns out to be a monster of the week kind of show, but I very much suspect it will be. I was hoping for something closer to "True Detective" but set in Gotham, as I thought it was supposed to be this gritty realist take on the origin of the Batman Story. It certainly isn't that, it's just seems to be another superhero based, seen it all before, show. Albeit without the actual superhero.

Having said that, it was perfectly watchable, and will probably be up there with the best of these type of shows.

It does have a few issues:

When is it set, exactly? I know this is a made up world, but it's set 30 years in the past, and people seem to drive old cars, yet take photos with digital cameras and talk on their mobiles
It's also incredibly fortuitous that Gordon's first case with his partner is the Wayne murders, and in the first few days of that case he either meets directly or is part of interaction with... A young catwoman, a young riddler, a young penguin, a young poison ivy and possibly even a young joker. What are the chances, eh? Give it a rest please, we know it is set in the batman universe, you don't need to shove it down our throats every second.

Some characters are richer for having back story, some are richer for having absolutely none. Nolan recognised and understood that with Joker. I'm not gonna prejudge too much and be down on Gotham, I would like it to be more than Smallville/Arrow and the others. It's all in the delivery.

edit.

OK, now I've read your review.
Oh dear. It sounds exactly like I feared then. biggrin
The fact they have put 'young' Joker, Poison Ivy and the rest in makes it sound utter st.
I'll still give it the benefit of the doubt and watch a few.

Watched the second episode and thought it was quite dark in a couple of places and the violence etc was well beyond what would be seen in the likes of Smallville.

It's no Dark Knight but I enjoyed this, back to back with The Blacklist at casa Dom9.

I think this is really good, definitely worth watching. It's certainly not a kids show and is pretty violent in places as mentioned above.

Think the real breakthrough here is the actor playing the penguin, he's very good.

The first scene in the police headquarters with the guy and his pills taking the policewoman hostage was so clunkily scripted, acted and staged that I just turned it off and haven't been back.

Yeah it's a bit of a who's who at the moment so I'm expecting the real stories to start next episode after this intro.

Looking good so far. Stylish, grown up, good production.

It'll be interesting to see if Sean Pertwee can do anything other than play a 'hardman'...
