Another excellent series from Mr Portillo. Enjoyed last night's in France a lot having been to both Lyon and Marseille recently. Hopefully the Beeb will do another one.

Next stop USA.

"Great American Railway Journeys" will see Portillo travelling the famous lines across the USA and will transmit in the summer of 2016.

Trains really aren't my bag (baby), but I do enjoy these programmes.

Plus in my opinion Mr P is a smashing chap who wrote a really nice reply when my nipper wrote to him about the show.

Sounds good. I look forward to that.

I've always wanted to travel on the Rocky Mountain train in Canada. The one with the domed observation car. I've done it on Greyhound buses, but nothing quite beats the train. When I was a kid we went on the Orient Express from Istanbul to Paris. It wasn't the luxury train at the time, just a regular sleeper service.

Resurrecting this thread to mention that Great American Railroad Journeys is on BBC2 this week (started Monday).

Having visited New York back in 2009, I found the first 2 episodes interesting.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the series. Back in 1992 after University, I spent a summer travelling around the USA with many of the long journeys taken on Amtrak. I've not seen ep4 yet but I think it follows the same route that we took on our first train ride from NY to Toronto, via Hudson and Buffalo.

Nothing like how I imagined it. I thought Romania is an old, tired and dirty country but in fact it's clean and beautiful.

Great episode.

Agree I was surprised. Very beautiful. He's toned down his attire though frown

Rather enjoyed last night's episode, even if there wasn't much "train" and lots of "other" going on, but then I really can't ever be a bad piece of scenery in Switzerland.

I've not watched last night's yet but that was one thing I did not care for with the first series; i.e. too much other stuff and not much train. With the UK one's it's very train based.

Caught up with last week's Switzerland episode.

I'm not into watches but the segment at Omega factory was very interesting. And I am not embarrassed to say that I didn't know Bern was the capital city!

Not sure about the Moroccan 'cloak' he purchased, but loving the jackets. Wish I had the cojones to wear that sort of thing to work!!
