There's a couple of good articles on Den of Geek that discuss how the X-men franchise is repeatedly pissing all over it own continuity. Pisses me off.

Thing is, you can't get away with that as a studio anymore really, Marvel has shown everyone that can have multiple franchises running that exist together and don't piss all over each other. Fox, Sony and DC would be wise to take heed.

Such as how Emma Frost appears in the Wolverine origins film as a teenage girl but in First Class as a woman? Yes, I know what you mean.

Den of Geek articles are generally really good. Can you post some links please?

The studios wanna keep hold of their purloined toys.
I thought it was known that the new trilogy is not really connected to the old trilogy?
That's what I got from the interview I posted.

So Sony reboot Spidey and Fox reboot X-Men...possibly ad infinitum to keep the characters away from Marvel.
We'll get the FF reboot soon.

Were my ears deceiving me or did James McAvoy put on a slightly northern accent in one line of dialogue? How the hell did that slip through?

Saw it this evening. I like the X Men but have often felt that they haven't been well served by their films. This is very, very good though, putting the franchise back on a par with the Avengers but without trying to beat that franchise at its own game.

From what I gather (not seen the new film yet) the two trilogies are different continuities?

Gloss over X3. Pretend it never happened. Days of future past is one if the better arcs from the comics, they did it well, though in the comics I think its kitty who goes back in time, not wolverine (but that would have been a bit boring, though would give chance to flesh out one of the lesser characters in the films). In the cartoons I think its bishop who goes back.... They chop n change as they see fit really. That's what alternate universes are for!!!!

I want to imagine it was a cheeky nod to Michael Fassbender going full-Leprechaun for a sentence at the end of the last X-Men film.

Eh??
What second trilogy and htf can you just ignore X3 which wrapped up the story? I thought First Class was just a prequel? And sod the comics, they are for teenage virgins, adults go to the cinema to see a film together. Are we basically saying then we have just randomly changed stuff for sts n giggles, not for any actual logical or continuity reason?

It's ironic that you're so dismissive of the source material as being only for adolescents and yet are behaving like one in the tone of your posts.

Ignore him, he always tries to troll threads.

I enjoyed it, I thought it was entertaining and worth spending the money on. I dont think too deeply about it. If I want to think deeply about plot, watching a film about people with super powers isnt the way to do it.

X3 was a total turd of a movie and Im glad we can effectively pretend it never happened. I took this film to be Brian Singer apologizing for letting Brett Ratner screw up the first Trilogy.

There are at least another 2 films to come before a reboot. Wolverine 3 and a third X-Men with the younger guys

Well they have messed it up a bit, but you can just about explain things away, albeit tenuously in some instances. They need to take a leaf from the avengers lot, everything gels and intertwines between films. I suspect they are only just getting round to this. But it does look like they are Changing things as they see fit.

Having said that, the original comics do their fair share of ignoring and re-writing history. Maybe they think fans are just used to it. You're right though, it's not going to do anything for those with no knowledge of the comics.

People can look at this as a second trilogy. I would like to think of it as, so far, two films which sandwich the last trilogy. First class is the prequel, days of future past is almost the ending, with x1,2,3 being the history leading up to it. The events in this movie then basically cancel out x1,2,3 (and that origins crap) and pace the way for new xmen movies in the new alternate timeline.

As you allude to they do need to make it more cohesive to get people hooked when they go watch these at the cinema, otherwise people will just think its a bit piece meal and won't get invested in the longer story arc. Hopefully that is the plan they have.
