No Godzukie, no like.
The curse of the cartoon sidekick. Am I missing something here, or does this Godzilla look exactly like the last Godzilla? The trailer looks exactly like the 98 film as well, which probably means that it will be st like the 98 film.

When I was about 8 I saw "Son of Godzilla" (or something similar) at saturday morning pictures, so I think 'Godzukie' predates the cartoons somewhat.
Godzukie (sp) was the nephew of Godzilla in the cartoons. I think that the link to 'son of Godzilla' is tenuous given the propensity for HB et al in that era to introduce 'sidekick' characters for comic relief. The nadir was arguably reached with thunder cats and 'Snarff'

Design wise I'd agree almost 100% (apart from he's a bit more 'porky' this time)Here's the 1998 version:
...and here's the (apparent) latest incarnation:

Agreed, the differences are huge between those two you've shown. The newer one has shorter, t-rex like arms, a wider body, thicker legs, much more dinosaur like. The 1998 version was almost humanoid in the way it walked, with long arms and legs.
Are you one of those people who sees a new car and suggests it looks like something completely different? Genuine question because those people baffle me.
This is from a few months ago, but it's a good quote about how they got to the creature design http://screenrant.com/new-godzilla-movie-2014-mons...

In a way we approached it was, imagine in 1954 (when the first Godzilla movie was made), that this creature really existed and someone saw him from Toho, the Japanese studio, and went running back to the studio and said, ‘I’ve seen this creature and it kind of looked like this.’ And they tried to draw it and they tried to make a suit and they did a very good job of it but then, when you saw the real creature, you go ‘Okay, I totally understand how you got that suit from that creature but now I see the real thing. Oh my God, I totally believe that it’s completely real.’ And that’s how we approached it. We went through hundreds of designs, and never stopped playing really until the last minute and got to the point where it was like, ‘Is there anything else that we want to change about this design’? And I was like, personally no, I’m very happy with it. And Toho was very much a part of the approval process. So it’s a Toho approved design as well.

2 legs - stands upright, checkThe 1998 version was almost humanoid in the way it walked, with long arms and legs.
Same length tail, check
No neck, check
Spines of a similar length, check
Spines sticking out in a similar shape/fashion, check
And I'm not aware of how the new one walks so are we sure it too doesn't walk in a similar fashion?
I can also see a similarity to the original Godzilla...
The point I'm making is, it's hardly a complete re-imagining of the creature from either the original or the 1998 version. It doesn't appear to have a new 'edge'.
That said, the trailer did a good job of making it creepy.

Haha. I like how geeky this has gone.
Re: the new design and what people cant and cant see - I think some people see details, whilst some see a wider kind of design philosophy. The car question is perfecly apt - you see a Ferrari 550, I see a Ford Probe ; )
He's an upright 'The Lost World' t-rex (tail to the floor) whereas in the actual 1998 film he's more 'Jurassic Park' t-rex, this his tail acting the counter weight to his head. I think the point of this was to cash in Jurassic Park's success - everybody wanted to see a T-Rex destroy a city and that's what we got. The reason his lower jaw was so deep is because he was modelled on Iguana lizards (which, due to French nuclear testing, he was created from. F*cking French)
The new film, I believe, is cocentrated on climate change. And isnt riding off the back of any prior commercial success in the way the 1998 version was. So they've more freedom to create him how they like. He looks much closer to the original here, I think. Although I also think a Fezza 550 looks like a Ford Probe, so feel free to shoot me down on that ; )
Re; the happy looking Godzillas in the Japanese films - I read somewhere that old Gojira was a metaphor for Japans relationship with the US. The first films depiction of a nuclear attack is fairly overt, but Godzilla becoming a protector of Japan, as the US did, kind of gets lost in the silliness of the later films. Not that I'm complaning - I used to stay up way into the wee hours to catch my favourite monster kick the sh*t out of a three headed, golden space dragon.
Yours rantingly.

It looks like just about any other film with explosions from the past 13 years.
Another monster film? Just take the one about robots and monsters from last year and stick a godzilla sticker on the cover?
Trailer makes me think it'll be utter st, because it'll be the same story.
I would love them to make a film of the 80s cartoon, godzukie or not I don't care, but jesus fking h titty christ on a popiscle stick, don't just make another big monster film with zero empathy for anybody that gets trodden on.
Last decent monster film for me was King Kong, you actually gave a st for the characters AND Kong because the movie makers actually put effort and thought into the film. Crazy idea for a monster film.

I really liked Cloverfield too, there's a lot of potential for a sequel, with the story that Cloverfield was the scared baby monster, and Cloverfield 2 was going to be mama monster . But I think JJ Abrams is going to busy with Star Trek Wars for while now
Sounds like Gorgo.ajprice said:

Bearing in mind they also said the same thing of the 1998 design.Gareth Edwards said:

I'm sure Dean Delvin had that 'approval' set aside in his budget when the marketing kicked off ; )
