Edge of Tomorrow - New Tom Cruise movie
Discussion
Finally saw this last night.
I think it would be fantastic if I hadn't read the book beforehand. The book's a lot better. The film goes it's own way in the second and third acts. To give you an idea of the difference, the book only has two classes of mimic and there's no 'visions' and no clear end goal.
One of the changes that the film made which was better than the book, however, was the way it treated the relationship between the two main characters. The film played on images of her dying over and over (leading up to the coffee scene) and in the car heading to Paris, she implies that she went through the same thing with the person affected before her. It was really nicely done. In the book, they have a full-on relationship.
The film also missed out on the Red bh's suit engineer who, in the books, is a bad-assed woman herself and - as we're in the movies - no engineer can ever be female. That just really irked. The whole suit technology thing was underplayed anyway, so we're left with a male engineer-psychologist hybrid in that role.
However - and this is what told me this was going to be a good film - did anyone else spot the Norad control room from 'War Games' as an easter egg in the backdrop to one of the talking heads during the intro? War Games is an all-time fav of mine!
If I hadn't read the book: 8/10
With knowledge of the book: 6.5/10

Just seen and thought it was excellent, the perfect antithesis to the Michael Bay films of this world managing to be clever, funny and interesting. Really sad that it didn't do well at the box office, so will certainly be picking up the Blu Ray when it's out
It cost around 180 million dollars to film and has taken 365 million dollars at the box office.Considering that steaming pile of crap Pacific Rim cost about the same to film but took well over 400 million at the box office I'd have to agree.
I've no idea why as it got great reviews and everyone I know who went to see it enjoyed it. Strange how it works with movies.

Incidentally I loved Pacific Rim, which was the type of fun popcorn movie that Transformers should be

Even then it's still considered to be under performing, so WB are just going to release a load of sequels instead

I suppose that shows us that for all the moaning we do about the lack of originality in Hollywood at the moment it's sequels that are bringing in the punters to the cinemas around the world and not the original films like Edge of Tomorrow.http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/warner-bros/32163/...

Found this regarding early concept art: http://kevjenkins.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/edge-of-t...
I watched it last night for the first time. I've had the BD on pre-order with Amazon for months, but recently learned you can buy it on Sky for immediate digital download to your Sky+ in HD, and they will post you the physical DVD when it's released. And it was only 99p more than the BD from Amazon (£13.99 vs £13) which seemed reasonable to me. Especially since it is still just under 2 weeks until the BD/DVD release date.
I really enjoyed the film. It was like Groundhog Day with guns and Exo-Suits. Since I love Exo-Suits, Gear, Power Armour, Mecha, etc., this was right up my street.
