For me I thought the first series was electric and riveting from the get-go. The relationship, the acting, the style all fitted seamlessly.
This. The first series was superb on every level. This one is just trying too hard and failing everywhere IMO.

Really? I'd been expecting him to go since he was introduced. Generic, fat , lazy detective with no backstory who hangs around on the fringes and enables them to kill someone recognizable for shock factor without having to lose any of the big cast members.
Yeah, I thought they were gonna go the route of him being a snitch/killer and possibly planting stuff.

Got to say that that was a twist I saw coming.

At last it's starting to come alive. I'd almost forgotten whose murder they were investigating after episode 3

Same.

Vaughn is excellent. Still hearing the trailer line, 'maybe the worst of you, is the best of you.'
I have a feeling about him though. Or I've watched too much noir.
Not sure if it's a pure Machiavellian set-up, or a piece of opportunism, or a genuine cock-up.
It may even be a double set-up!

Knew the fat cop would be in it. He was all wrong.

Where the show is now, is where most shows have already finished, it's feeling pretty good.

I think it's east to forget that TD1 didn't take off until the second half too.

Yes, TD1 had the intrigue factor of the narrative idea of flashbacks and the superb monologues, but it only took off once it did the time jump and went present day.

TD1 had me hooked from 5 mins into E1. It was genius TV this one may turn out to be OK, but it's not in the same postcode IMO.

+1

Season 1 grabbed me from the opening scene and never let go, I've not experienced that with s2 and only started paying proper attention to it during the most recent episode.

Although I still don't know the names of the characters and can only refer to the by the names of the actors.

I think I am less disappointed than most here because I was not expecting a v 2.0 of the first season.

Casting Vince Vaughn as Frank was ballsy and I find him rather convincing.

Plus, the fact that you find most of the same producers as for Season 1 (Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, and Nic Pizzolatto) shows they had faith in the new project.

Anyway, I find this show one of the most interesting ones currently on TV.

agree, if you stop comparing it to S1 (which was a different storyline / vibe / style) it stands up very well on its own IMHO

has a sort of LA Confidential / film noir feel to it with corruption, dodgy cops, femme fatale characters (albeit set in a later age)

On the whole, would have to agree with this article.

True Detective: is it OK to admit that no one knows what's going on?

It's an interesting viewpoint, and a bit tongue in cheek as if the Guardian journo *really* doesn't know what's going on, then their knowledge of the subject is tragically poor.

I think in the last 20 years we are used to watching films and series where every line uttered by every character is integral to the ongoing plot, or repeating the ongoing plot for people who are slow. 24 was the worst for that, it even had scenes that are engineered into the plot just to remind the viewer what the pertinent points of the plot are.

This is ambiguous, and is as much about the tragic stories of the characters as the plot so far. However, of course the tragic stories of the characters will form the plot later on.

There's some tragically st acting in this series. The scene with Taylor "Secretly Gay" Kitsch and his mother was sub-Neighbours in its woodenness.

On the plus side the theme song is slowly growing on me.

Was I only one who thought that his Mum was up for some incest in one scene?

Yuck.

Completely agree. Here's my comment from earlier in the thread. I think they're all overplaying it, as TD1 was a revelation for McConaughey's acting.

Watching Vince Vaughn in this is like watching Dr Drake Ramoray and his smell the fart acting.

I'm convinced that bloke is not an actor, he struggles to stop looking at the floor and always looks like he's in a bad mood and needs the toilet

To be honest the whole thing is a mess and the stereotypes are just funny, gangster is the man in a suit, bad guys are Mexican, edgy cop has drink problems and is fighting custody of his son....
