There was a really slow burn detective series set perhaps in Alaska on BBC a few years ago, Cardinal. Worth a watch.
Cardinal was ace, i binged all of the series over about 3 weeks last year. Loved the characters.

2 episodes in and I'd have Danvers and Prior as the central partnership all the way through although there is the Navarro/Danvers back story and friction to develop and resolve.

TD has never been super natural that I can remember so not sure where they're going at all. Surely not a direct lift from Fortitude?

My opinion is that the supernatural element is a red herring. They are interweaving Indian traditions of spirits into the story to obfuscate the viewer, from some the real crime and motive.

Also the deaths are very much a parallel to the Dyatlov Pass Incident.

Season 1 is the best TV ever made imo.

Season 4, the potential supernatural element.

There's been a good few hints that it's something to do with the water supply, halucinations most likely caused by something from the mine

Enjoying it so far anyway.

We'll see how it develops.

Fortitude wasn't a supernatural plot device but I am/or was concerned that surely TD is not going for a direct or loosely distant copy.

Good shout.

Made much more obvious now with the still births and stty water coming out the taps. Hoping the hallucination theory is correct as otherwise that bit in the hospital was stupid.

Didn't enjoy that one. Lots of general weirdness not really moving things forward mixed with blatant signposting of what has been said above.

My thoughts entirely, plodding, I found my attention elsewhere.

I didn't enjoy that episode as much the first time but second viewing was a better experience. Felt slightly filler but sets up what should be an interesting episode next week.

Thought I'd try series 1 because of the recommendations here but found the first three episodes slow moving and hard work.....but it comes alive in episode 4! Looking forward to the rest of it now.

Just watched episode 4.

My immediate thoughts: Another filler episode, even more so than the last one.

With 2 episodes remaining, we're no closer to resolving what happeed to the scientists or even Annie. The focus seemed mainly on a background character of the show and her eventual fate. The darkness and dirty water are red herrings IMO - the latter no doubt causing abnormal birth rates in babies. However the real killer here possibly are the hallucinations and evoking memories of deep personal trauma and using recollections that blur the lines of dreams, nightmares, past and present reality.

Would be an intersting plot device.

Still haven't watched S1.

I'm finding S4 hard work so far. It doesn't have much or any momentum. After investing all that time not much has been thrown at the audience to keep us satisfied or engaged.

Since it's over halfway through that's not too promising for the rest.

Loads of critics went bonkers for it before launch. I'm still waiting to find out why.

Adam.

Snap, all this talk of supernatural bks is putting me off - is that prevalent in the story?

I think it's a red herring, without giving too much away the "strange" goings on are potentially linked to another part of the story.

We started watching True Detective last week, finished episode 2 of season 3 last night. The wife thinks it's brilliant while I think it's twice as long as it needs to be, you could definitely tell the stories of each season in 4 episodes. I'm going to give up on it and take myself off to watch some paint dry.
