Involved in the series are us, and the septics, who uses kilometers? As far as I know, neither of us. What gives?

So am I missing something regarding the President's daughter and her relationship with Jack? Has she been in a previous series?

Yes, Jack was romantically involved with Audrey long before her father was president. After Jack was captured by the Chinese (read the back story from the previous seasons) she was also abducted and interrogated (tortured) whilst trying to free him through diplomatic back channels. Jack being a double hard bd and having his military training to fall back on helped him make it through. It pretty much mentally destroyed Audrey who did not have such training to fall back on. Read Audrey Raines Wiki for the full back story.
