Transformers: Age of Extinction
Discussion
Don't ask me how but I've seen it. It's better than Revenge of the Fallen (what isn't?) and actually has some comprehension and story, although to call it a 'plot' would be pushing things a bit. A decent Bay film compared to some of his others. Does what it says on the tin but isn't so different to what has come before. Not too much is played for laughs, in fact in some places it can be quite serious but still family friendly. Wahlberg is way better than Sam Witwicky thankfully. Also huge, wide, gaping hole for more films too. I just hope they ask Del Toro (or someone else. Anyone else!)to do it instead of Bay again.
My neighbour has a spare ticket and, despite my general dislike for films in 3D, we're going to see it on Saturday night. She offered and I couldn't say no
I've read the plot already (I hadn't planned to see it for ages if I'm honest) and some reviews and my expectations are low. But then again, I love all the others and look past all of their, er, foibles and plot holes and I hope for it to be awesome but a real "brain in neutral" film

Started out ok. I was actually wondering why all the bad reviews. As we continued into the films two and a half hours I started to feel more and more fatigued.
Even the effects (previously the series saving grace) aren't particularly great. The new transformations are particularly poor.
I'm not sure why bay can't make a great transformers movie.it should be pretty easy really.

Went to see it last night, probably the best indication I can give of it's quality is that even my 10 year old boy said it was "only OK, not that great".
I'm still not sure it was worth sitting through the entire movie just to see Optimus riding Grimlock. It's a 3 hour special effects demo, nothing more. Worst of the four movies by a long way. Stick with the trailers because there's little in the way of story, you're getting all of the best bits without the sore arse.

It's pretty tedious and, In the end, quite boring. I'd be being generous to give it 4/10.
I'm just back and I can't decide if I enjoyed it or not as I feel like my head's been put in a blender.
Too many stories going on, too many sub plots and I feel like that blonde woman from the arctic or wherever was just removed from the film. Badly.
I liked Whalberg - Hated Lucky Charms - enjoyed the eye candy.
The shot of his daughter in the short shorts from the back was a welcome unnecessary shot. I approve!
I did NOT like it as a 3D film though, my eyes genuinely ache.
I need to sleep on this as while I don't think it was a bad film, it wasn't exactly great.
Which, funnily enough, was exactly what I expected.
Marks?
It met my expectations and delivered what I thought I'd see. 10/10
As a film? Less than 6/10 on current thinking.

I started writing a post on here, but it got longer and longer so I put it on my (pretty much empty) blog:

Couldn't you say that about any 'Bay' movie? http://james-tw-niclair.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/tra...

I wonder what kind of hack job he could make of Star Wars though

Yes - They work but not as anything engaging.

To be fair to Bay, he's not trying to make Citizen Kane and has (as far as I know) never said he was. A Bay-directed Star Wars would certainly be explosive (literally), which is more than can be said for the insipid prequels as directed by Lucas. I wonder what kind of hack job he could make of Star Wars though
I think a lot of people find Transformers (and Bay films in general) to be somewhat of a guilty pleasure. That's not to say they aren't flabby, or liable to result in sensory overload, but sometimes you just want to leave your brain at the door when you go to the cinema. There's no reason you can't enjoy Transformers et al for what it is whilst also enjoying something more cerebral.
Also on a fundamental level and in spite of the reviews these films gross stupid amounts of money, consistently. There's a danger of being overly puritanical when it comes to accepting these movies - the populist opinion is clearly winning out financially against the critics.
I watched this last night in 3D. Im not the biggest fan of 3D films, and this seemed a bit much with lots going on which did hurt my eyes at some points.
Probably a bit long, and some of the fight scenes seems to go on longer than I would have liked.
Overall pretty much standard Transformers and Bay movie which I liked and certainly better than the 3rd one.
