Wheeler Dealers 2014/2015 - New Series
Discussion
I used to be a massive fan of the show but have been getting pretty bored of it all up to the point where I haven't even properly watched the last few series. It's not so much the "same old" content that others speak of (I can watch car related things over and over, as I have a deep interest in cars..), it's more to do with the presenting style that they're leaning towards nowadays. Everything seems big, flash, very scripted, dare I say it "Americanized"?
I liked it back when they were low budget, real DIY in your garage work e.g. mild resto on a Mini, refreshing a 205 GTI, not a half arsed Skyline drift car and a snake skin wrapped RX7! The converting everything into dollars doesn't half fizzle me teeth also
Not relevant in any way but thought I'd get that off my chest!

Sadly you cannot buy 205 hit resto projects now unless the price is high. The junk you can buy cheap is properly junk - would you consider restoring a Vectra SRI 16v (the w reg to 56 reg) I doubt it.
So your either looking at old bangers which were never much good when new but the chap flogging it is telling you guaranteed future classic --hmm yea so why are you not doing up the shed?
I was googling on the Land Rover that I mentioned a few posts back, and I thought this post on a forum was quite revealing:
None of this comes as a huge shock, of course, but it still annoys a little. Especially when Edd now can use a mega-money disc lathe that you can't even hire to do a job - rather a far cry from the "you can do this at home" roots of the early shows.

Only thing that puts me off wheeler dealers is that I met the original owner of the Yellow Stage 1 S3 they did up a few years ago. He told me the real story behind the episode
(Edited for grammar and excessive use of exclamation marks in order to bring the quote up to PH standards. )- They claimed the paid him £1000 for it. They really gave him £1400 for the motor 3 months beforehand so the bargaining bit is fake. It's a woman over the phone that deals with you and sends out a mechanic to inspect the vehicle (not Edd China)
- They often show you Brewer with a trailer on the back with the project motor. They did this on the Yellow Stage 1 episode, whereas the motor was transported by the seller for extra money.
- They also showed the Stage 1 minus its seats, windows, door handles and trim.. Wheeler Dealers removed these items before filming the buying scene to make it look like a project even though they were all present and fitted.

The 205 GTI and Mini were used as examples, as I stated in my post.. So what you're trying to get across is that everything cheap nowadays belongs in a scrapper? Renaulsport Clios, Civic Type R, MR2s to name a random few are all available for next to nothing. Move up the budget and you have E46 M3s, Lancer Evos etc etc.The junk you can buy cheap is properly junk - would you consider restoring a Vectra SRI 16v (the w reg to 56 reg) I doubt it.

Anyway when I said low budget it was more to do with the type of work being carried out and the whole filming style. Do you actually enjoy watching overpriced Halfords spoilers being put onto so called drift cars and Subarus getting racing stripes with Ed & Mike autographs on them?

I think that everyone agrees that those were Wheeler Dealer low points. But, thankfully, they have been fairly rare. JonRB said:

That mint Porsche 944 turbo that they butchered. I like the show but that was gut-churningly horrific.
Yes, that's true - take one absolutely mint 944 Turbo and turn it into a track slag. It was a bit of a shame that they couldn't have done that to a slightly less mint car. I think most of the worst episodes are ones where they have taken a car with nowt much wrong with it and then tried to "improve" it. They do so much better when they take a tired and unloved example and then bring it back from the brink and make it desirable again.
It's moved from being a programme to show you how to make a bob or two by wheelin' and dealin' to a programme that shows a new technique to do something.
3-D printing on the Darraq
Bringing a car back from the complete dead on the 2002 - I don't think they've done that before.
Showing how a mechanical fuel injection pump works.
Induction tool to heat the water pump on the Jag XJC.
Making a tool to remove an A310 Alpine rear hub bearing.
Brake disc skimming tool.
Even popping down to Pirtek to get a clutch hose made for £25 in the Urraco episode is "out of the box" thinking for some viewers.
Ceramic coating the XJC exhaust mainifold.
Waterless coolant (*)
Terraclean (*)
Some of the techniques shown would cost more than the value added to the car by the repair, but that's not the point.
I'll bet that each of the episodes in the rest of the series show us something that they haven't done before (probably for little or no financial gain).
(*) I know that these are commercially endorsed by Edd, but it's good to know that they are out there.

"Are you randy?"
I admit it, I did snigger.
Shame they didn't opt for a prettier round tail light car. Personally I think the carb models are way better value for money too. Added to which, you don't need to worry about the injection pump failing. You won't get it rebuilt so cheaply over here either.

This is the second episode this series that I haven't really watched.
After the excellent BMW2002 episode they follow it up with this rubbish.
Mike mentioned several times that the Pacer has been voted the worst car in the world and then they managed to reduce the potential market even more with the vinyl wrap.
