I saw the Pacer one was on last night, but realised I was an ep or so behind with the BMW 2002 still to watch, so enjoyed that instead. Sounds like a wise move - I really don't like the Pacer in any case, will give this a miss.

It did sort of amaze me the BMW episode, more from the angle of property sizes for the Average Joe suburban Brit vs American.

Randy had seemingly had that car in his garage, just sat unused FOR 17 YEARS but still had plenty pace to work round it, store all the other assorted garage crap and it not really be in his way. My bog standard UK size garage is by comparison packed to the rafters with three motorbikes, assorted pushbikes, tools and loads of other paraphanalia, the only car I could leave lying around in there for any space of time is a Dinky one. I need a tidy up, or to move to the US! smile

Home come they sold the car for $8k but only gave $4k to charity? Surely the discovery channel could have given the whole lot to the charity?

Along with Wayne's World, that Pacer reminded me of another rock comedy, This is Spinal Tap....

i watched it at 2am, i was having a hypoglycemic episode, so watched it eating a kitkat and a lemonade.

i thought i had dreamt the whole thing.

reading this i now know I have dodged a bullet by not watching it fully aware of what is going on smile

Although, according to Mythbusters, you can.

(Having said that, I think they cheated - they heavily varnished a turd and then polished the varnish)

I think you could make a cool Pacer. Slot mags, metalflake paint, full on 70s style, drop in a supercharger and some side pipes, I'd roll it.

I don't doubt it, and quite a few people have. That was the brief in this case and it just didn't happen, but it wasn't just the build that was crap - the program itself was shocking. It seemed poorly edited and I swear I even spotted a wrinkle or three in the honeycomb top layer of wrap on the bonnet (sorry, 'hood').

Even the dippy lady who was selling the car didn't redeem the escapade.

Truly dire episode... Although we do
now know that the Pacer has overly complex front suspension, I suppose.

How do you guys rate For the love of cars? It was on channel 4 in the 8pm Top Gear slot. They don't really show you much of the build, and the main restorer looks way to clean even when he is working on the cars, but I quite enjoyed it.

I had only watched a couple of the first series, but this Aston one was good and looking forward to the SD1 police car this week.

I'm about to go and watch the Pacer episode over dinner now, on the grounds of "how bad can it be".

I'm sure I will be back later to say "as bad as you said". smile

I say give them the benefit of the doubt, and assume it was a joke.

It is possible to make a pretty good car out of a Pacer, but rather than the number 5,500 (dollars) you'd need numbers like 8 (cylinders), 401 (cubic inches), 5 (gears), and 400 (brake horse power). Then you'd end up with this (which sold for $10,200):

That would really be a laugh. smile
That's the thing - this one appears acceptable and has some decent go. Yet they spent a fortune and it's still st plus fire engine. Not sure why Mike enjoyed giving it some revs saying oh lovely... Um a 4 pot diesel sounds similar.

Ed made a terrible terrible choice

Imagine if they put a 635ci up front WITH supercharger and left it externally looking st , drop it and decent rubber but on rusty steel rims. And internally just the same original but make good.

Was that guy Mike from the Boyd codington tv show that was on a few years ago?
its driving me nuts I know I have seen him somewhere before. Was it on OC CHopppers?
first thing I thought of when I saw Mike2 was Overhauling.

As regards the car itself... I'm not a huge fan of the pacer but as the black one about shows they can be made to look reasonable, unfortunately while some of the ideas were quite interesting but sorry Edd old boy that was a fail

To quote myself, I just finished watching it and... meh; I've seen worse episodes. This was a nondescript filler episode. They spent a stupid amount of money on a wrap which was cool and appealed to my nerd nature (it was very "Tron: Legacy"). But ultimately they told us very little about the Pacer and also they cut their losses and donated it to charity at a loss. But as was pointed out on For the Love of Cars thread, it's not possible to make a loss as such as it's just trivial compared to the expenses of making a TV programme.

So.... meh.

I'm glad that you all still think of it as a "let's make a profit" show.

Were you all aware of flocking and triple wrapping?
