No, they do clones or "tributes" quite regularly, in the US and nobody cares as long as it's clearly and overtly noted as being a clone.
My 05 Mustang has styling features of a Mach 1 but isn't and doesn't purport to be. However, if I stuck Mach 1 badges on it, nobody would mind because it plainly isn't and would be a "tribute".
The question is how much did the 350 with a slushbox conversion from the six cylinder cost.As opposed to how much extra would putting a 396 crate engine with a manual conversion have cost.I'd guess a 'clone'/'tribute' based on the latter would have been worth a lot more than one based on the former. That mistake then seemed to be reflected in the original sale price.

To me the whole deal seemed like a lot of profit was made from a car that didn't warrant the final sale price assuming all the figures provided were true.To the point where the original sale price would have allowed that better more correct spec to have been put into the project thereby making it the car it should have been from the start while still leaving a reasonable profit when it was finished.

I think the answer to this is that, back in the day, a large proportion of American cars were automatics - many Americans couldn't even drive "stick". Accordingly, the manuals are rare and sought after and I'm not sure the cost of one would be justified, especially putting it into an incorrect car, if you see what I mean. It would be like finding a 911 2.7RS engine and slipping into a 912?

350 crate motors are very cheap in the US, not sure about the big blocks. However, if you go with a big block then you'd also probably be looking at replacing the back axle too. Chevy "glass" axles were not the last word in durability IIRC.

Certainly in the 3rd gen Camaros, anything with a 350 was only available with an auto as their manual box couldn't handle the "power".

That's surprising bearing in mind the potential which the Camaro had from it's introduction. In terms of transmissions I think all the quick manual trans Chevys were fitted with the Muncie which seemed to be strong enough to earn the name of rock crusher. While final drive availability to handle everything up to a 427 etc was/is obviously there for anyone who wanted the power.

It was all tied up in the £7500 part. In any event, you can now get old cars in on 5% VAT although, with a crate engine, I suspects some porkies may have been told to qualify the car:

•Is the vehicle you are importing into the UK over 30 years old?
Customs now allow certain cars older than 30 years old into the UK without paying any duty and just 5% VAT – the car has to be in original form with no major modifications to engine, chassis etc . There are different conditions that must be met but it is best to apply with customs early if you think your vehicle may fit the criteria (for more information please see our article ‘BTI Scheme 9705‘)

I guess the SS badge bodge was to appease the sort of viewers who would mind if an M badge was fitted to a boggo spec BMW...

A lot of people Sky Plus it, so they can FF the ads and Mike's boring recaps (weel, all Mike's bits really...). Still haven't watched mine yet.

Yep, I do this with most programmes these days, its amazing how much waste there is in the program alone. "Yes Mike I know you bought a car that Edd needs to work on, the add break was only a few minutes not a few years - I can remember".

This re-cap format really does my tree in, please stop it and spend the 5 minutes saved explaining something else about the car that has been bought.

Totally agree. If you take one of these programmes (not just Wheeler Dealers; any one of the many that do it) and cut out the adverts, the "coming up" stuff, and the recap stuff, you'd be left with less than half the running time.

They're all trying to grab the "floating" viewer who can catch up if they tune in half way through.

If they got rid of all the recaps it'd make a decent 45 min programme.

EFA.

I know this because I edit them and put them onto DVD. It's really surprising how short the programs really are.

I think it's for the lucrative [dumb] American market - they need to be spoon fed everything more than once.

Next Monday there starts a new series with our heroes. Called "Wheeler Dealers: Top 5" it begins with a double header.
