Bingo. You can often spot new tyres that are not mentioned or costed and it would be folly to assume that they don't change the oil / do a full service whilst they are at it.noell35 said:

For this reason, I'm surprised that they didn't overhaul/polish the headlights (as I don't think they have done this before), unless they found they were too bad to reclaim.

Three reasons spring immediately to mind- it's the Discovery format and
- they expect to catch people channel surfing who have just joined
- it pads a half hour show out to an hour.

Wheeler Dealers is one of the main reasons I still tolerate the SKY subs....
I do enjoy WD and I'm entirely realistic about the whole premise and the finances involved.
One thing that does annoy me though is the way MB reacts to the offers made for the car at the end. He's frequently borderline rude, even when the offer is entirely reasonable - for example, the TT guy offered £3500 against a price of £3750 and Mike virtually rubbished him as a time waster (can't recall the exact words). I have to say, if I was buying a car and got that reaction, I'd probably walk before any further prices were discussed. It's not as if the guy offered him £2000 for it.
But then again perhaps it is all just scripted anyway - not likely to encourage the average punter to haggle though, is it!

Yes, yes, I know it's just a TV programme. But they need better scriptwriters and Mike & Edd need some acting classes.
(I still like the show though)

Mike buys a decent, working car in the first place – as with the cost of repairs on “do-er up-ers” slightly duff, fun cars, makes no sense.
Mike buyers car over the internet (eBay), seller describes car as per advert. Mike has nothing to talk about, other than it is a good car. Test drive is Mike saying, “as described”.
Mike pays the amount listed on his “auction site”.
Mike arrives at garage, with A/C working, relaxed and in Mx5 Mk1 1.6 with LSD (every week). He just did a 400 mile trip, no probs.
Edd “whats up with the car?”
Mike, relatively emotionless, says “Ermm nothing really, it needs a clean and a service. Oh, and a CEL reset – I’ve bought you the device off ebay, £30. Almost forgot – the tyres, the guys on the internet always spot them!”.
Edd fix’es car, no fancy tools. Viewers watch Edd do what kwick-fit do day in, day out & then watch Edd rub a clay bar over a car for 20 mins, and then change a tyre (4 times).
We watch Mike haggle over 5 litres of oil, as he has nothing to do, and then decide Opie Oils is cheaper. Viewers watch mike on the net, ordering oil. Viewers also watch Mike order 4 tyres from MyTyres. Mike also makes sure he gets Snow tyres in prep for the winter, while laughing at 4x4 drivers with summer tyres.
The next day, Mike returns to garage. Says to Edd “Well, the car looks pretty much the same – and you’ve done what anyone can do, I owe you £150 in labour”.
The car is listed on eBay, PH etc.
Viewers watch Mike chat over the phone with buyers, and agree a price of around £200 more than he paid for car.
As the deal is sorted over the phone, viewers watch Mike sign a V5. Mike and Seller smile at camera, and shake hands “As agreed”.
Garage shuts down as £50 doesn’t cover costs, and the show ends.

I would guess Mike puts out feelers and someone offers him a car with a set of known faults. Mike then pretends to do a deal and pretends to spot these faults before handing it to Ed who always has the right tools handy for these unexpected jobs and the parts are always available.
We can see the fiction but nobody cares as long as it's interesting. They get the revenue from the programme, the car is largely incidental.

Mike turns up & does an act. Researchers find the cars, scope them out & settle on the right one for the show. This all came out when they did the 914 & a couple of guys on their forum revealed how it went, with one getting rejected as there wasn't enough to do.
There's really very little difference between WD & Eastenders. It's an artifice designed for your entertainment with a director, script editors, runners, make up artists, production accountants, lighting guys and all the rest of it.
I could sit here & pick Eastenders apart - they're all self employed, the murder rate is hilarious, no one smiles, they're all banging one another it's so unrealistic. I mean why even bother? If you really wanted to experience the real thing, why not hang around your local garage once a week?

I like Wheeler Dealers and watching some of the early shows reminded me how simple some general maintenance tasks are to do myself. So, in a way the show has saved me quite a lot of money
The main thing with the show is to remind yourself it is entertainment and not factual. For me, it’s easy watching. There’s no stupid, false deadlines, the presenters aren’t too grating and they generally appear to do a good job.
I always thought that the sale at the end was a little too staged, but my views on this changed when a good friend of mine bought one of the WD cars, when they turned up to a show with their latest offering.
Despite owning 5 cars, my friend had never actually watched Wheeler Dealers, so when he saw the car he didn’t really realise that he’d be on TV every month for the rest of broadcast history. Having watched the show he was involved in everything does appear to be a little wooden, but then again he “held out his hand” (on camera) and then they had to film it half a dozen times to get it right, so the spontaneity seems to have gone . That said, he then got criticised on a forum as being “in on the act” which I know he wasn’t. S’pose it’s what happens when you give people keyboards...
I’ve seen the car loads of times and it had a lot more work done on it than was shown on the show. Also, the amount the WD team said they spent on the car was considerably more than the figures shown at the end of the show
