I'm guessing the CAT system only works on British Registered cars.

A question about the Porsche Targa episode (0930 this morning). The owner said that the only thing to look out for in the engine is white stuff on the oil filler cap (head gasket gone). But, it's an air-cooled engine, so is it me being thick, or is he talking crap?

Always wondered about the Target cars business model, and how they were able to sell UK cars cheaper than you can buy them in the UK...

I really enjoyed the Z1. Those doors are an optical work of art.

not an aircooled expert but one would assume that if the head gasket had gone, and there is no water cooling, the water would have to come from moisture in the air either in the piston chamber or from the outside of the block.

Do HG generally go on air cooled? Do people have Beetles or lawnmowers with blown head gaskets - I'd say its exceptionally rare.

Well worth £200 for a Porsche expert to assess the 993 you are looking to buy @£20k plus surely?

On the Z1, would the original yellow show through on the seats after a bit of use? The dye/paint finish looked good when done but I'd be a bit concerned that it would wear off and begin to crack after a fairly short period of time, especially on the seat bolsters.

No, its basically the same way the majority of leather car seats are finished anyway.

The Z1 is a beautiful car, had me hitting the classifieds after that episode, a Z1 with a 2.7 litre Alpina or a period 3.3 or 3.5 motor would be a great little car, the doors are just the icing on the cake.

Going back nearly 20 years, my boss had one. I recall cadging a lift to a meeting with him in it once, and being really impressed with the doors. Less so though when the passenger door spontaneously dropped while we were doing considerably in excess of the speed limit on the M6. Only then did he tell me that the had a bit of a mind of their own and sometimes opened without warning!

Unlike most of this series, which really hasn't grabbed me at all, I quite enjoyed this episode. Perhaps that's more because I like the Z1 than anything else.

I would imagine living with one would be like getting in & out of the bath. I shouldn't wonder most Z1 owners have spent more time than they would have liked t-cutting shoe scuffs off the door panels.

There was me thinking they had bred some mutant bright yellow cows wink

Just found this series and am enjoying - well would enjoy more if they didn't keep telling me what they told me and had just did a montage about it all in-between! Good to watch with the lad so he picks up practical tips for when its his time to pick up a spanner!

I didn't get why they sold that DB7 so cheap though - they never seem to factor in Ed's labour time so it looked like a loss to me rather than the positive they claimed?

You mean they dye them bright yellow then put black on top? Most car seats show some sort of wear fairly quickly, but it's usually the underlying leather that begins to show through not a tacky yellow base colour.

Discovery Turbo channel are currently doing a whole week of Wheeler Dealer episodes back to back as they celebrate the 100th programme next Monday. Great to catch up on some great cars they have done over the past few years.

...and use AskMid to get an idea of how many cars are still in use - not many!

This has been addressed many times but it's about what you might have a crack at yourself and you wouldn't charge yourself labour rates.

No I meant that they technique to change the colour, is the same technique new seats are coloured in the first place, its not a dye its a water based paint that then has a water based clear top coat applied, the cracking etc. you normally see in worn interiors is not actually the leather thats cracked, but the paint that provides the colour and easily rectified by reconnolising.

Only Aniline leather is actually dyed and its a not very common, expensive option (if at all available) normally reserved for Rolls Royce and the like.
