When I seen the trailer for this weeks episode I was all set for not really enjoying it but I am with some of the others on here, great episode, really interesting to see the fixes for the wheels and the water pump, I think what made it even better was seeing them really enjoying the car AND there wasn't the whole buying & selling bits at the start & end of the show.

Loved Ed's outfit too!
I'm just watching it now, and agree with all of this. thumbup

Great episode. They both seem like great fellas.

Mike gets a bit of stick on PH which I think is extremely unfair. He seems (to me) like a completely normal bloke who doesn't pretend to be someone else just because he is on tv.

Two things that confuse me on this episode

  1. The tax disc next to the headlight in the final few minutes of the show was "10 00"
  2. The programme was copyright 2013
So presumably it was made last year for last year's London-Brighton run rather than this year?
Not sure what explanation for the tax disc though.

My thoughts also.

It's the only motoring program the OH will watch with me!

Was that the last time it needed tax?

Banner over finish line was 2013, this years is in November. Filmed before the rest of the current series.

I've just realised why they didn't get an MOT - they didn't need one as the car is pre-60. But, AFAIK, it should still have had a valid tax disc.

Also had Paul in it, who was notably absent from the rest of this most recent 2014 series.

Good episode. I wonder if the Haynes Motor Museum bloke was having second thoughts when they were first ragging the car around his carpark !

The car park is the Haynes museum track! Spent a great day there with the Atom Owner's club, a very short circuit that really only needed 2nd gear but good fun.

I popsted this back in 2010

Mike views 1st car - decides not for him.
Mike views second car - decides he'll buy it despite its faults.
Mike shows car to Ed.
Ed thinks its great until Mike sheepishly points out faults, but he tells Ed he reckons they're easy/cheap to fix.
Ed not convinced, but says "Hmmmmmm" and gets on with it.
Ed finds fault that is far more costly to put right that originally thought.
Mike visits later. Accuses Ed of having done nothing.
Ed indignantly points out all of the hard work he has done.
Both conclude it's going to be difficult to turn a profit on this one.
Ed continues working whilst Mike 'sources required parts on the cheap'
Mike delivers parts. Ed delighted.
Car finished. Mike is amazed. Mike suggests they go for a drive.
Car goes up for 'sale'. Mike resolute he will not let the car go for less than £x,ooo.
First buyer views car. Loves it but won't pay the price. Walks away.
Second buyer. Loves car and puts in cheeky offer. Mike shocked and incredulous at the offer that has been made. Suggests counter offer.
Buyer 2 still not happy - makes counter offer. Mike agrees, on the condition they'll look after it.
Reasonable attempt at making the deal look real, but don't manage to fool anyone.
Car 'sells' for less than Mikes bottom line figure.
(Still enjoy watching though. smile )
I posted this 4 years ago.

Funny that they no longer look at 2 cars before buying, nor do they have 2 possible buyers for the finished car.
I guess they don't have enough time due to all the recaps...

Good programme in what has been an excellent series IMO. Next week Mike starts another series of his Trading Up of which I enjoyed the first series.

Although I do watch the show every week, i'm becoming more and more p***ed off with all the recaps after every fecking ad break - I actually find it a bit insulting to my intelligence! The show definateley needs a revamp in order to gain a bit more than the current 20 or so minutes that each 1 hour episode spends on actually working on the cars - that's 20 minutes spread over 3 ad breaks!
The best series for me, where you actually saw interesting work being done in detail on screen with no bullst recaps etc were the ones that Mark Evans did 10 or so years ago, 'A Car Is Born', A Plane Is Born' etc, I can still sit and happily watch all those back to back.

The trouble is that I find Mark Evans a desperately dull and uninteresting presenter. Edd China is much more personable and makes for a better programme.

The ideal situation for me would be whilst Mike Brewer is off doing his Trading Up spin-off, Edd gets his own "... is born" type spannering show. I'd watch that.

No more weird than the 50s UK Fords that had vacuum operated windscreen wipers. smile

Actually, definitely less weird than the wipers. They would stop working at inopportune moments.

I'm sure an old Audi I had once had some kind of pneumatic central locking system. You could hear a little pump operating and the locks would go down one after the other. scratchchin

It looks like Discovery have really clamped down on user uploads - usually you can find full episodes online somewhere, but this new series is absent everywhere I usually look.

They are on Youtube with a link that is £1.89 an episode.

I have had a car with vac locks and for the life of me I cant recall what it was - maybe a Bentley Turbo ?
