Proving that even as a young lad you really needed to get out more Eric. A career in accountancy was already beckoning.

All part of the fun for me so no need to be a smarty pants.

Indeed, the preponderance of model work in these series was inspirational to me and showed what could be done regarding weathering etc to make models look more realistic.

I would argue that Gerry Anderson, in conjunction with the Bond films, ensured that Britain assumed a leading role in the world of cinema special effects - a role it still has.

I would also like to think that his series also inspired youngsters to take an interest in aircraft, space and engineering - not just accountancy smile
Anderson once told a story about Stanley Kubrick, who had just started work on 2001, phoning him up and inviting him to lunch. Anderson accepted the invitation and then jokingly said "I hope you're not just after my special effects people". Kubrick said "Oh well, there's no point in having lunch then", and promptly hung up!

Gerry Anderson was brilliant at making the most of available resources.
Take UFO as an example: SHADO HQ uses a film studio as cover, which means Anderson can use the entire studio back-lot to film in - genius!
Sad to see what's happened to Straker's car, although I imagine it wasn't built to last in the first place.

The first series I remember was 4 feathers fall but it was Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray and Thunderbirds that were my favourites. The later stuff didn't do it for me. Joe 90 in particular fell way short of my expectations.
Anyway back to Thunderbirds. I'm sure I saw an episode of Lady Penelope in FAB 1 took to the water out to her yacht FAB 2? No-one else seems to remember it. Did I dream it, or maybe it was in TV21 magazine.
Anyone remember?

Cheers

The car was built for a previous Anderson project, a 1969 film called 'Doppelganger'. It was based on a Ford Zodiac and was by all accounts a horrible thing to drive and downright dangerous to boot. The gullwing doors required a strategically-placed broomhandle or off-camera stagehand to hold them in the open position.

I used to love Thunderbirds (and other G. Anderson stuff) when I was a kid. It was these shows than inspired me to make models (using anything I could get my hands on and when imagination was king) after watching them - and I now get paid quite well to design models!

TY Thunderbirds! hehe

I still remember she had a very seductive voice, they don't make kids programs like that any more!

I was delighted with the Thunder bird one toy that father Christmas gave me one year. So much so I chewed the rubber nose cone off. Spoiled forever. frown

...a Sea Harrier with a st load of speed and torque. T2 at take off was a London bus in the wrong gear up hill. (The bit of wood flying it made it lighter mind).

Fully laden a harrier would use huge amounts of fuel to take off vertically. Also a harrier can only fly vertical/hover for a limited time, so waste that in a vertical take off, and you limit the time to hover and land later.

The fuel thing would be valid for FB2 smile

Come on guys!

You are forgetting just how cool the whole process was!

I mean the friggin palm trees folded down to clear the wings as she taxied out for launch!

I am sorry but as a small boy, that was me sold forever, it was the coolest thing I had ever seen!

Of course when captain scarlet and the crew, and his SPV came along, no one could beat that, I mean come on,,they drove the SPV facing backwards looking through a camera system to drive!

Nothing' was ever cooler! smilesmile

Aqua Marina was cooler IMHO ... though I thought at the time she should have floated.
