Anyone watching this? Chief Inspector in uniform arrests Custody Sergeant and cautions him, no problem in that? Reads out the modern PACE caution, the program is set in 1969!

Ah, never mind. Great programme filmed in my part of the world, like spotting the locations. Martin Shaw is one of those actors who is good in everything he does.

Where's his accent from then?

Think he's playing a Londoner, moved to the North East to get away from his past (or that bloke who shot him in the Cathedral)

It is distinctly disjointed with the 1950's law gobbledygooked into today's methods. Might be deliberate to keep the 2014 audience onside. Might be cock up's - I think the latter.

Dear THW,

watched it, enjoyed it.
Fortunately my extensive knowledge (not) of police procedure did not cause my disbelief suspension to falter. Even I wondered about the caution.
I was also slightly puzzled at the point about an hour in where Gentley jumped from conjecture to certainty regarding the killer.
As if the program was filmed at 2hrs and was hurriedly trimmed to 90mins.

Nonetheless I was hooked. That Lee Ingleby can act a bit,

regards,
Jet

Speech anachronisms are the bane of 'period' television and cinema. "Any time soon..." (horrible expression anyway), "Laid-back...", and other late 20th and early 21st century expressions stick out like sore thumbs to anyone who has either lived through the birth of the terms or read books from a number of periods in history.

Enjoyable...and amusing to spot the 'notice' pinned up by the stairway in the hospital - what would they have printed that on in 1960? Roneo machine? Hardly...

Sad to see he's ditched the 3.5 for a measly 2 litre.

Thought the Bacchus bloke is trying desperately for a BAFTA with his internal strife, but any chance they could get Gently to investigate something with Endeavour?

Only speaking as someone who learned the old Judges Rules caution in RMP, before learning the old PACE caution, then onto the new PACE caution. wink

Not a 3.5 - would it not be the old IOE 2.6 straight 6?

Power for the new Rover 2000 comes from an entirely new four cylinder engine of simple, robust, single overhead camshaft layout. An excellent power output of 90 bhp. (installed) is developed at 5,000 rpm. and this is combined with extreme economy of operation.

I haven't seen the new series - didn't he drive a P5 in the previous one?

Me too. But I thought the girl who played the young WPC was good, it took me a while to realize it was the dippy one from "Hebbern" biggrin

I saw him on stage recently in 12 Angry Men and thought the opposite. Miscast in my opinion. For such a key role I had trouble hearing what he said; he was also the only one to fluff his lines.

I like this
But my enjoyment has been ruined by observing a modern MK double switched socket on the wall behind Bachus.
It was painted over but there was no mistaking it.
