Can't Pay? We'll Take It Away!: Ch5 9pm

Didn't the 2 days turn into 2 weeks in the end?
And it did sound like he had been around the loop a few times already, given he knew exactly what the situation was with the kid & that he was fine to be moved I'm sure he'd had the same excuse raised lots of times.
I suspect there was a lot more to it than just the sob story.

I don't understand how you can just live rent free in a property and when you get evicted just leave without any charge, its theft plain and simple
Its worse than that. They can smash up a place, and walk off with your belongings and its not treated as theft. I have a few rented properties and one of mine recently went bad. On eviction day they took all the white goods with them, and all I got in return was a report from the EA telling me what was missing.
I was actually sat outside in my car watching then load my belongings into a truck. The EA told me that I could not approach them or the house until the check out was done, or could mean the loss of my deposit.
Imagine if you hired a car, didn't pay for it. Then while it was being recovered by the bailiffs you kicked all the panels in and removed the wheels. You would think the police might get involved.

They were very professional in how they dealt wth it.
But I've realised watching this its always somebody's else fault to why they can't pay or move out.
On this one I'm with the Tenant. Landlord is a tt. But I've realised watching this its always somebody's else fault to why they can't pay or move out.
I can't imagine what that family has been through and what it does to a family.
Not to give them 2 days is ridiculous. I'm not surprised his face was masked.
I really don't think Landlords should be able to use this High Court route for evictions, or they should at least have to give them a fixed date, not just turn up after the Housing Office has given them the County Court route advice that notice will be given.
1. A formal a notice to quit, then
2. A possession order from the courts.
Both of those will have had fixed dates to leave which were ignored by the Tenant.
The Landlord then has to get a warrant for eviction, so why should they not get it as soon as is possible? By this time you could easily be looking at 9 months, so why do they need another 2 days rent free living at someone else's expense.

Because they will have been told that they wil get a date from the county court and that they are not treated as homeless until they get that date. I have no objection in principle to the system and shorter timescales, but I don't think it's acceptable to be able to turn up with absolutely no notice to someone's home and change the locks.
With a kid on life support and constant care that's where this story went wrong. Jonesy23 said:

Yep, was mentioned at the end of the programme which I hadn't seen at the time of my above post. And it did sound like he had been around the loop a few times already, given he knew exactly what the situation was with the kid & that he was fine to be moved I'm sure he'd had the same excuse raised lots of times.

Hmm, I missed the very start, but the first couple bad the feel of chancers to me, with their attitude. They seemed to be very comfortable, one would think if their 'home' was that important, they'd do/sell anything to keep it.
The second couple I had more sympathy for, they seemed more genuine. Done over by the daughter or the house-owner.

What annoys though me is that a lot (not all) of these people are playing the game. They go to the council and ask for a property & the council tell them they can go on a very long waiting list. They'll then move into private rented, claim Housing Benefit but not pay the Landlord. Landlord then has to go through the court system to evict. Tenant then rocks up at the council saying they've been evicted & the council then provide emergency accommodation & a boost up the list. Mum gets a new place to live (no Dad, natch) and the kids have Ipads and PS4 in the bedroom. Landlord is left out of pocket & normally also has to repair a trashed property. If the council paid HB direct, this situation would be a lot better.
A mate of mine is a LL like me, and will happily take anyone to court for damages & lost rent if they do this to him. He knows he won't get his money back (or maybe at £1 per week) but he says for him it's the satisfaction that in 4 years time if they want to buy car insurance, get a loan, move into private rented, get a job where you need a clean financial record then they'll struggle as they'll have CCJ's etc.
