Keep singing that song by The Drifters and the one by Level 42

(Like Sister & Brother and Running in the family for those not music orientated)

Storyline was definitely unrewarding for this series.

Whoever that boss character guy is needs to go, really frustrating character and completely unbelievable.

Well I sort of expected that - pretty unpleasant subject matter after the viewing time involved

Well I really enjoyed it

Plenty of plots that sometimes went nowhere, which is probably far more realistic than the usual linear format many police shows follow.

One thing bugging me though....
What was the song Ruth played on the cassette at the very end. 1990s indie band

Oh thank you! I said the missus it sounded like teenage fanclub, but I haven't heard anything by them for 30-odd years! She'd never heard of them at all, so was no help.

I was pretty surprised to read they are still going and have a dozen albums behind them
Best wishes

We enjoyed it too. Personally I thought Granny would have had more to do with it being a big star (Downton Abbey) and obviously having a bigger pay cheque!

I enjoyed it overall, by no means a classic but watchable.

Realised eventually that the Bain cleaning lady was played by Lorraine McIntosh of Deacon Blue fame.

The fiscal? Having worked in the Scottish courts*, I can say for certain that there is no way on earth that a fiscal would interfere in an active police investigation to that extent.

  • Including Lerwick!

Funnily enough, I've heard it pronounced both ways by Shetlanders! The name comes from Old Norse "Leir Vik" meaning "Muddy Bay".

Yes, I also heard it pronounced both ways when I visited Shetland in the ‘70s. Didn’t know about the derivation though beer

The fiscal seems almost to be acting as a senior officer to Tosh - which raises the question, from what I've read, Shetland should have at least a Superintendent as area commander, but Tosh doesn't seem to answer to anybody (apart from the fiscal). Where are all the uniformed senior officers?

I love that when Ashley Jensen was chasing her suspect she sent a message that she had no idea where he was going. She's on Shetland, how many options are there on that road?

I’m afraid I found it so riveting that I fell asleep for the last 30 minutes so if someone could explain briefly who killed the girl and why it would save me having to rewatch it and probably fall asleep again.

Area commander is a uniformed Chief Inspector. There is then a uniformed Inspector and a DI (or that used to be the case). There was at one time in the late 70s and early 80s (when the Sullom Voe Terminal was being built) a Special Branch DS, as well as other detectives. The Sullom Voe Terminal was the site of the only Scottish IRA bombing during the Troubles.

The guy married to Dawn Steele killed her, because it turned out that he wasn't her father, her actual father was Dawn Steele's character's brother (the one who lived in the barn) after a one-off night together after their father had died. The girl told him during an argument and he got angry and throttled her. with apologies for already having forgotten most of the character names.
