I was bored last night (wife away) and decided to watch The Italian Job. Haven't watched it for years and thoroughly enjoyed it. Particularly enjoyed the 60's Italian cars in their period setting. There were some memorable performances (Noel Coward - incomparable in his last film role) but the little cameo that stood out for me was Irene Handl as Miss Peach. Perfect comic timing and genuinely hilarious, a gem of a performance that I had forgotten.

I like the little exchange with his tailor (Henry McGee)

McGee "Haven't seen you for a while sir."
Caine "Yes, I've been away."
McGee "Well, I'm glad you're out, I mean, back".

It's a flawed gem but I never tire of it either, it's brimming with period charm and has the best opening and closing sequences of any 'car' film ever made.

The Miura in the opening sequence is still for sale in Cheshire...

Henry McGee was the master of that kind of role.

I used to love the 'interviews' he did on The Benny Hill Show - little facial changes said so much!

As for the film, I watched it one Sunday a few years ago and loved it as much as I had all the other times I'd watched it. Flawed? Maybe, but a masterpiece!
