I've worked for 20 years in a local Chinese takeaway (admittedly it is considered one of the best in the area), but that presentation by Ping fair took my breath away.

The Chinese I work with are fully aware that the stuff they sell is for British tastes, and has nothing to do with Chinese cuisine, but it's at the end of the day, just junk food. (We had someone come in last week with a Mars bar, asking us to batter and fry it for them - peasants). Even the average sit-down Chinese restaurant couldn't come up with her standard of food - it was like a fine-dining variation on Oriental traditional meals. Breathtaking. I was gobsmacked. My Chinese colleagues couldn't believe that someone could do that.

Very well done, young lady. You are never going to be out of work, that's for sure.
Have to agree with you on this, what she did was to take it very high level, and she was a worthy winner, my only issue was that out of her comfort zone she was quite ordinary. It was nice to see her rivals being so genuinely pleased for her. Overall I thought Jack to be a better all rounder for someone so young. I liked all 3 of the finalists very much. Looking forward to the professional one later this year, though what will it be like without Michel Roux.

Yes. I would say Malaysian Chinese, who make up about 25% of the population. Her dishes were Malaysian influenced, but my Chinese takeaway does Malaysian and Vietnamese dishes as well as the usual Cantonese and Szechuan pseudo-Chinese fare. I reckon she's of Chinese descent. Not that any of that matters, I just want to eat at her restaurant. She's a star.

I just watched this on iPlayer and preferred Jack's food. Obviously I couldn't taste the food, so perhaps she won on the complexity of the flavours.

It was the first time I've watched since the prog was on Sunday afternoon's with Lloyd Grossman. I was amazed how good the final few contestants were. I think all 3 were happy at the end cos they knew how well they'd done and were presumably planning careers. How Jack learned all that stuff at such a young age is incredible. But the way Ping showed she could do any job in any restaurant was exceptional. I bet she'd be good at washing the dishes or doing the paperwork too.

I really can't see Luke working in a restaurant, even his own.

I think the only thing he'd really be suited to is private dining, tbh.

Home cooking and restaurant cooking are such different skills.

I have to say, as good as Ping's food seemed to be, I thought the standard of competition was generally lower than previous years. Lots of posters here saying the opposite though. Maybe it just serves to highlight how subjective cooking and food is. Especially through the TV, being denied the (fairly important) ability to taste and smell the food.
