Having Austrian relations I'm very familiar with the plum dumpling dessert Carl was trying to make - and I tell you that, done properly, it looks, smells and tastes delicious. The potato-based dumpling mix does not taste of spuds (the starch gets strained out of it).What Carl did with it was a cross between comedy and travesty.
ETA The German (well, Austrian dialect) for plum dumpling is a bloody awkward word: might have the spelling wrong, but it's something like Zwetschkenknodln (with an omelette thingy on the o).

I had forgotten that line, it was like a slow motion car crash, I thought it looked bad enough and then he dumped a pile of greasy onions on top
