Top Gun

From about 2:25 onwards being the best part.
Without any meaning to offend - what exactly is great about that beginning? Some planes, crappy 80's music and a bunch of fatmen making american gestures?
not sure - maybe it's because i love planes, especially fighter jets.

but that opening sequence gives me goosebumps *every* time. i just think it's very well done and put together.

the slow-motion and closeups of the jets - their awesome power and brute force, yet they're graceful at the same time smokin

the silhouettes, backlit by dawn just breaking (i'm very much an early morning person)

the music

the comraderie and sense of well trained people, working together and doing a hard job very well.

am i overthinking it - maybe, but only trying to explain why, for me, it's a fantastic opening. thumbup
Look I replied with out tapping keys on my keyboard.

But seriously I love planes, main reason I joined the RAF, plus when the F-14 goes into full re-heat and the exhaust nozzle moves that is just great.

I like the music, love the step change to go from the mellow scene setting music to the build up of take off of the F-14 straight into 'Dangerzone'.

As for the groundcrew, they are doing a very hard job in a very stressful location, over exaggerated hand movements means no miscommunication resulting in injury's. Plus they are American and being flamboyant in these sort of situations is a given, no?

As for the poster asking about my comment on it being the best bit from 2:25 and how is that the opening, I love the whole opening seqeunce but as I already mentioned when the F-14 goes into re-heat, goosebumps everytime. (But then when waiting at the threshold of the runway at Brize yesterday a Tornado came in, so I had to open the window of the van and lean out to watch and listen, so maybe I just like fast jets!!).

Anyway all my opinion, but OP hope I managed to show my justification a bit.

The Sound Of Music laugh

(It's much better in the Spike Milligan version, when he runs up over the crest of the hill and then does a farty-sounding raspberry. He was "de man" and then some........)

Remember seeing at the cinema aged 5 and being blown away by what seemed to be a never ending ship flying overhead!

People keep saying "Saving Private Ryan".

My memory of the opening is an old bloke and his family wandering round a cemetery.

I hate that bit, and the accompanying closing sequence, with the old duffer tearfully asking "have I been a good man?" I also hate the dying Miller (Hanks) telling Ryan "earn this".

I thought the opening sequences for the Star Trek reboot were pretty awesome. James Kirk's birth amidst a massive battle and his father's suicide to an instrumental score was pretty amazing. And perhaps not still classed as an opening sequence, but seeing a young Kirk joyriding whilst blasting out Beasty Boys was awesome smile
