You're right. Was better later on.

Wasn't that before the final polish after driving in the rain to the auction.

What an eyesore. An abomination.

Do the work because it's your kind of thing by all means but £14500 for that!

Shows what I know as clearly more than one person wanted it.

Is that the same buyer again?
Yes.
Startinbg to all feel a bit FIFA ... But a really nice car turned out there, and I'd love something like this as a daily.... Definitely feels special when you appreciate all the design cues and effort into rebuild....

I don't know why they bothered with the auction? They could have just done that guy a deal on the job lot.

Did I hear right about 1,000 hrs to restore ? Multiply by cheapest rate of £50 (I'm sure his company charges more ) and your looking at £50k labour charge !!!! Any of his restores at this auction would have been a bargain, if it's the car you like

I thought exactly the same.

It's an entertainment programme, of course, but if I were the chap I'd ask them to scrap the car and give me the £50k!

Remember the auction for all the cars was on the same day, that guy is a bit of a collector/dealer so don't worry to much.

Due to the amount of work carried out on every vehicle the only one out of pocket will be Channel 4.

Surely Channel 4 are not footing the bill?
I would have thought that Ant is out of pocket, but at the same time, getting one huge advert for his business?

It's Channel 4 the Beetle probably owes them 20K but they'll have made that back & more with the first set of adverts.

Bare metal restorations engines prepared by the best in the business the cars are bargains compared to the amount spent on them.

Weird hybrid; not original and not custom. Slammed suspension and roof-rack looked awful imo, grey colour looked a bit drab, red interior was nice but lost the utilitarian feel. Wish they would show more of the metalwork being done.

Liked the beach buggies though.
Agreed. Sadly, I suspect this is the direction classic car restoration may be going.

Seeing those campers brought a tear to my eye. I bought a VW Devon Moonraker 2 ltr in 1978 for 8k. Sold it about 1980 due to moving house, and it's still on the data base as being insured.

So if you have XAY 264S, look after it, 37 years and still going well, apparently.

I very much doubt Ant's company are footing any bills here. More likely the production company would have laid out initially, then made it back when commissioned for a second series. That said, the figures being thrown around in this series, prior to the record breaking auctions, seem pretty far removed from real world figures.

I agree about the record breaking fees, but due to how much they've spent on the cars they are still bargains compared to doing it yourself.

The VW probably didn't even cover Ant's labour costs when sold let alone the engine rebuild Interior etc, also lets not forget the Top Gear effect can you imagine how much more popular the 2nd series has become which means advertisers would have been beating the door down to get on board.

it looks like Ant has done minimal work on each car anyway, looks like the work has been contracted out to other people and Ant has just popped in for a bit of filming every now and again.

I am sure no one is losing money on the programme and in effect C4 are getting a fairly cheap to make programme, compared with the cost of making most programmes.

I'm still enjoying the series, but the justification for doing the cars is highly variable...this chump last night was in the trade (don't auto electricians have mates who do the other bits?) but had made lifestyle decisions that restricted his plans - having a baby is a massive game changer.

If the car was the 'be all and end all' he'd have done whatever was necessary to get it fixed, no?

However, when a TV company rings up and wants to shower you in cash, then I can see why he might be tempted.

As for the buyer - his late bro once sat on a Beetle (photo evidence to hand)...is he buying every Beetle he ever sees? This one one was different age, different colour, different fitments, different stance, maybe different engine and also different interior. Must bring back lots of memories.
