Was expecting a bit more of the mechanical side of things.

Seemed about 90% history of Ford Escort and about 10% restoration.

But as a car history lesson i thought it was pretty good

Worth a look I guess, but does anyone make a show were you see the car being resorted ? This was more the back story to the Escort, and less than 5 mins of actual restoration. They did avoid at least the Discovery Channel usual thing of fake arguments, crisis and deadlines only just being met.

to be fair though - while it might to appeal to some - an hour of a car being laboriously restored is not going to rate. Mixing a bit of grease monkey stuff with all the nicely shot driving sequences and nostalgia is what is going to get a decent audience. You'll notice they went with the car closest to the presenter's Gene Hunt persona and with a chance for plenty of "life on mars" sequences for the first episode to drag people in. Not sure a Land Rover will offer quite as much chance to play on 70s cops and robbers nostalgia

Fantastic program more please and I really think having Philip Glenister as the presenter really works as he comes across as a bit of a car fan I'm looking forward to the next one..

I know it's not the same but I've really got bored with watching top gear recently and usually have trouble keeping my eyes glued to the set on a Sunday evening and this program is a bit of fresh air for the car nut with some all time great cars being rebuilt properly instead of a cheap blow over and an oil change.

It's if the production company looked at classic car rescue and saw where it went wrong and decided to get a decent presenter rename it and do the program properly.

I guess the average Sunday evening viewer doesn't want to see in-depth car restoration. More mechanics and less nostalgia/human interest would probably be met by the sound of thousands of viewers changing the channel.

More info on the car they were restoring would have been nice but I think the programme struck a pretty good balance. Also interesting how they called it the ultimate Escort, ignoring the Twin-Cam and RS models.

No, because it's things like the inner skin in places that make it a genuine mexico, what makes it worth the money over other mk2 shells.

Nicked from PF..

Genuine RS models have reinforced strut tops.
Genuine RS Mexico would originally have had a black back panel where the rear number plate sits.

The genuine Mexico was only built between Jan 1976 & September 1978.

It should have axle location rods fitted on each side of the car locating the axle to the bodywork.

Check that the wheels are the correct age & type for the car if fitted with 4 spokes.

Genuine RS Mexicos should be fitted with chassis plates with the words GCAT stamped on the VIN plate & logbook
All of that above is for the MK2 Escort RS Mexico, the MK1 Mexico was never badged RS but the RSOC

do recognise it.

Quite enjoyed this,no Bernie shouting for an hour and divvy Mario...silly

Loving the harris engine build
I've not seen the senior members of the Harris clan since the heady days of the cruise scene back in the late 70's early 80's when they used to terrorise London in their V8 powered Zephyr's and Zody's biggrin
Hey you and me both. I used to live in Thornton Heath around the corner from American Auto Parts where I used to spend most of my Saturdays. The Harris family were regular visitors in their Mk1 and Mk2 V8 Fords. They really were the faster guys on the street back in the 70's and 80's. I used to convoy with them up to Santa Pod for the Run what you Brung meets. They were as near dammit to street machine royalty back in those days. Happy daysbiggrin

That was a cool program, more please

I dragged a photo album out from '86 with my RSOC stuff (had a Mk2 RS2000) and bored the family who were round for Easter.

Great show, got it on series record.

Did I hear right when Philip Glenister said the green 'Harris special' Escort did a sub 12 second quarter mile? Shirley shum mishtake, that's 996t territory. What engine does it have in it if the figure was right?eek

I know of a standard looking but tuned "a little" MK3 that has gone under 10seconds,so 12 very do-able.

Thoroughly enjoyed that. I have to ask though, is it nostalgia or is a sorted mk1 actually a decent drive? What would be a semi modern equivalent, 90's 3 series? Either way new cars leave me cold. Both the Carpi and the Escort are still a fabulous looking car.

Enjoyed that as a bit of Ford history. Hadn't heard of that Harris lot before.

Loads better than that restoration rubbish on Channel 5!
