Someone mentioned to me that they wish to remake, Porridge.
I'd seen that somewhere too... think they said it would be the original writers and based around descendants of the original characters so at least that's something to slightly distinguish it. It's not like they are trying to make a new Fletcher, Mckay or Barrowclough but simply relatives, so a chance for the new actors to put their own spin on it without trying to copy too much the originals. The cast is stellar and the trailers look pretty good. I think it'll be fun.
Don't get me started on The Sweeney movie though...........

A thin Plan B : "We're the Sweeney son, and he ate my dinner"

Saw it last night, thought it was spot on - lovely gentle humour and far more faithful to the original than any other modern remake of anything, ever. Naturally the critics are savaging it in exactly the same way they'd savage the original series if it were to come out now. So, mission accomplished I guess.

Arthur Ridley was a great friend of my paternal grandfather. They both grew up in Bath and somewhere around 1912 were both members of the local shooting club. Arthur Ridley was a sniper in the First World War with the Somersets. Huge casualties sadly.
Hope he didn't call him Arthur...belleair302 said:

Coincidentally there's a long article about his brother Arnold Ridley on the BBC web site today http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-35491036He says he avoided being a sniper because he didn't want to kill anyone.
One little known fact about Arnold Ridley was that he wrote the play "The Ghost train", which was made into the classic vintage film starring Arthur Askey.

Another thumbs up for the new Dad's Army from me. Well done with a great cast. A worthy homage to the original IMHO.
Agreed.Whilst I can see that it's not everyone's cup of tea, I thought it very true to the original idea.
Sure, the plot was a bit of a waste of time, but all the performances seemed a great homage to their roots.
Well worth kicking back and letting it wash along!
Saw it last night - can't say I found it hilarious but no one who loves Dad's Army could be in anyway upset by it. It plays very dutiful homage to the original in every way.
I also can't agree with the many reviews who say a stellar cast were "wasted". It took a fantastic cast to pull it off - it wouldn't have worked with lesser actors. It is a credit to all of them that after about 10 minutes into the film you accept all of them as the characters.
It also ends with "You have been watching...." and the proper theme tune.

Mrs Digga and I went to see this with my parents on Saturday evening and we thought very much the same. it was fun, it really never was going to be possible to make a film carry the same subtleties and complexities of character and comedy as the TV series, but the reprisal was good and worth doing IMHO.I also can't agree with the many reviews who say a stellar cast were "wasted". I did laugh a few times and I did think a couple of the performances were very nearly the equal of the originals. IMHO Toby Jones and Michael Gambon both did superb jobs.
Went to see this last night and I thought it was really good, more than just worthy of being called Dad's Army. Toby Jones was great, Daniel Mayes plays a brilliant Walker imo but I honestly think Michael Gambon as Godfrey is a stand out. He's perfect for the part.
If it was announced tomorrow that they were going to make this as a new series I'd want the cast to stay exactly as it is.
