The episode where the team found out about Godfrey's First World War service makes me well up, every time.
And a real life WWI Somme veteran, WWII 1939 BEF and later home guard. And his great gran-niece is new Star Wars star Daisy Ridley.

First thing which really annoys me is "1944...on the brink of defeat". Umm, actually, we were not on the brink of defeat in 1944. We were in 1941, maybe 1942, but not 1944.
Yes that puzzled me too when I heard it.

They could so easily bugger it up.

But... the trailer shows promise.

And the actors are making and damned good first of reminding us of the charm and brilliance of the originals.

Tut, tut. Pte. Godfrey carrying a rifle ? Surely not.

The episode where the team found out about Godfrey's First World War service makes me well up, every time. Likewise the episode where the crew mutiny against Mainwaring, and genuinely tell him to 'do one,'
Those two episodes are about as perfect as you can get of mixing pathos and humour and coming up with a golden result. I can watch them over and over.
Do you remember the one where Willson had a secret to keep - can't recall what it was but may have been a daughter. Anyway, after pursuing the secret relentlessly, Fraser finally finds out what it was and then, conceding that although he is a "blatherer" promises he'll never tell a soul about that.

Makes me well-up just the same as you. Love the characters.

Episode called "Getting the Bird"
The other story line in this episode is Walker obtaining pigeons for Jones' butchers shop.

Not related to the film as such (character from the TV show) but thought this might be interesting.

As is mentioned further up.

It seems to be one of those films all the critics hate but the audience seems to be quite liking it.

Like Fast and the Furious?

I admit I am getting rather turned off by the screentime of Zeta-Jones in the trailers.
Trying to update the perfect formula due to some misguided beliefs?

I was wondering whether to go and see it (not expecting it to be anything like as good as the original) and saw a trailer on TV (one show?) that convinced me not to.

It just seemed bland, the characters didn't have any spirit or, err, character.

As said up there ^^^ the original was partly so good because each character was funny in their own right, you were almost laughing before they said anything just by the way they stood or moved.

Have been trying to avoid seeing anything to do with it (so yes, totally logical to be in the thread for it), but accidentally caught part of a trailer last night on TV. Something like a parade to show off camo or something I guess, but just hearing the voice for Private Godfrey (Michael Gambon it looked like?) - just nope. nope nope nope nope nope.

I'm all for remakes where the story / setting is the strength, but when the original material has been so heavily dominated by the original actors portrayals of the characters, to the point where they are synonymous with the roles they played, it's just on a hiding to nothing I fear.

Would you try a remake of only fools and horses without David Jason or Nicholas Lyndhurst? One Foot in the Grave without Richard Wilson?

I hope it's good, and the people who go to see it enjoy it, but I just fear it won't be.

These remakes never quite hit the mark, they don't have subtleties of the original,
like remaking Are you being served and having Mollie Sugden say "anyone seen my ?"

I'd seen that somewhere too... think they said it would be the original writers and based around descendants of the original characters so at least that's something to slightly distinguish it. It's not like they are trying to make a new Fletcher, Mckay or Barrowclough but simply relatives, so a chance for the new actors to put their own spin on it without trying to copy too much the originals.

The cast is stellar and the trailers look pretty good. I think it'll be fun.

Don't get me started on The Sweeney movie though...........
