Went to see this last night and I thought it was really good, more than just worthy of being called Dad's Army. Toby Jones was great, Daniel Mayes plays a brilliant Walker imo but I honestly think Michael Gambon as Godfrey is a stand out. He's perfect for the part.

If it was announced tomorrow that they were going to make this as a new series I'd want the cast to stay exactly as it is.
Thinking back two days.... I'm right in line with that! Can I just add that Nighy was also, for me, that deal-clincher. That cast could run and run ...

Just back from seeing it - a very enjoyable film. Catherine Zeta-Jones was easy on the eye!

A nice gentle homage to the original.

Completely agree.

We thought Ian Lavender's appearance was rather brief, even less than the vicars !

Ian Lavender, 70 next Tuesday, is almost as old now as John Laurie and Arnold Ridley were when the TV series started.

Nighy even looks the part as Wilson as well, he does the suave English gent perfectly.

I liked the fact you see more of his relationship with Pike's mum as well. Hopefully the cast do get something more long term from this, be it another film or 2 or even a new series. I'd be amazed if one channel isn't even contemplating the idea.

To be honest, they could have ditched Mark Gattiss's role and just had Lavender fill it.

Saw this on DVD last night. Thought the characters were spot on, just a pity they didn't do much with them. Could have been a lot funnier.

I watched in on Saturday night and I actually quite amazed it wasn't as bad as I was expecting it do be.

There was even scenes that did make me laugh out loud; the sausage joke and the close up of Jones' van going down a country lane.

But they main difference was the balance of the cast. So in the originals, whilst Mainwairing is clearly the main character, closely followed by Wilson, the rest are not very far behind. But in this film, Mainwairing is so much the main character and the rest of the platoon as little more than extras; they hardly get a mention.

I think as remakes go it was one of the best I've seen - they really paid homage not only to the characters and the original actors but also the style of humour and the period it was made in.

I did think for the first 20 minutes or so "dearie me this isn't very funny" but it got better. Mainwaring was spot on, and the others weren't far behind. The whole thing was very old fashioned, as though it had been made in the early 70s. Very gentle, no modern sensibilities. As such, it did its job. I remember me and my wife came out of the cinema after seeing it and thought how refreshing it was just to see a gentle comedy like that (but what younger audiences would make of it I don't know).

Not seen it.
It be hard in my mind for it to equal the original film.

Toby is in my top five fave actors though.

He's everywhere. Last night I watched the Ian Dury biography (Sex & Drugs & Rock and Rock), and there he was again.

I normally get annoyed with the ubiquitousness of actors, it means they get miscast a lot. But Toby is so good, I cannot think of him getting miscast.

It was good, respectful if not a little too much of zeta jones for my liking, although for me Gambon's portayal of Godfrey was spot on.

I enjoyed it when I finally got to see it. Nice homage to the original actors and characters, it wasn't Toby Jones playing Arthur Lowe playing Mainwaring. But what I liked most of all, no exposition of who they were, they just were these people. Wish more films did this.
