I don't follow where you're going with this, i'm right handed with everything apart from two things, shooting a rifle and pulling a bow which i've put down to being left eye dominent and my brain subconciously doing its job to get the best results. Bullst you can be trained naturally to want to be right handed and bullst your weak eye can become as good as your dominent. I've shot clay pigeon for 30 years so i do vaguely know what i'm talking about. shooting as a leftie I will get into the 80's on a 100 bird shoot, switch to right and if I hit 20 it would be a miracle.
The thing is most new recruits have never shot before so being taught to shoot right handed is not an issue. Unlearning old habits and changing everything you feel I'm sure would create issues!

Out of interest, when I was at school (~20 yrs ago) doing outdoor stuff, they gave us compo rations. Biscuits brown and all that. Do the forces still use those?

Sort of, but the latest versions are much more varied with a far more errr....."multi-cultural" menu. All boil-in-the-bag stuff now too. Much easier. It all went down hill though when they removed the Tunnocks Caramel Wafers, Bacon Grill and Cheese Possessed frown
The Yorkie bars were a bit of laugh though...where Joe Civvy was getting the marketing campaign "Yorkie: Not for girls", the ones in ration packs bore the legend "Not for Civvies" (and I'm not making that up)

They weren't that bad before, just an utter ball ache to prepare.
Fecking fiddley little tin openers, mess tins full to the brim and balanced on a poxy Hexi stove that refuses to light despite using "Lifeboat" matches that could double as a smoke grenade, chicken curry welded to the base of the pan.....
'appy days.

I thought the tin opener was brilliant piece of design. The hex stove not so much smile

Any one old enough to remember when the caps took over the pith helmets at the passing out parade for the bootnecks the helmets had so much more visual presence, don't know why they fazed them out.

As far as I know they still occasionally use them.

The tin opener, while fiddly, was a great design indeed. Let's see. Biscuits Fruit were always ok, Biscuits Brown were, er, only useful to bung yourself up if necessary (it seemed). Bacon grills were nice, the burger ones... not so much. Apple flakes were good for the porridge, as was the chocolate powder. That hexamine stuff was evil, and those folding stoves were a right pain. But, it got the job done I suppose. I was never sure about the dark grey liquid that was in the mess tins when you had to clean them - presumed it was a layer of aluminium coming off.

Had forgotten about the matches - they looked like mini bulrushes!

Why did you only get 4 sheets of the thinnest bog paper known to man?

Yep, my Grandad (Commando in WW2) had a bugler in full gear with pith helmet play at his funeral, never been one for sentiment, but felt immense pride on what was a very sad day.

Apols for the drive by post, but love how the beret is handed out immediately on completion of the final test. Also loved how Harris(?) was asked who he was after his retest & told he was wrong, only to realise he was now Marine Harris.

Great stuff.

I still have a Compo tin opener in my kitchen drawer!

In my day it was 'Biscuits AB' or 'Biscuits Fruit AB' (Squashed Fly Biscuits).

Bacon Grill and Bacon Burger were execrable! Totally, utterly, NASTY ste!

The ROLO's (complete with Arabic writing on the packaging) were nice.

My favourite has to be tinned Baby's Heads (Steak & Kidney Pudding)!

The 'Official' meaning was: 'Alternative Bread'.

However I know of several vernacular meanings which are probably more aposite!

I also agree re the gun jamming I dont think it was cause his gun jammed more cause he couldn't deal with it jamming. If you were in a fire fight being rushed and had a jammed riffle you couldn't say to the enemy "alright chaps give me a minute the bloody gun has broke". You'd have to deal with it and do it quickly. They can't guarantee that it won't ever jam!

This x a million. At that point in training stoppages should be dealt with like your in the Matrix or Max Payne vide game. It should be automatic and like getting a perfect reload in Gears of War every time where they shout "oh yeah" or "bring it". I thought he flapped too much and while I've had a few stoppages I've not had a double feed. While they do occur i think that a faulty weapon or magazine would likely be the cause of this type of stoppage in successive tests.

Never fired any other rifles so don't have anything to compare against the sa80 but HE round UGL or GPMG are far more satisfying.

And corned beef hash (discontinued) for breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday FTW! Treacle pudding is gipping!
