Also notice the need to ram down vast quantities of calories, simply because of the amount of physical effort, yet insufficient time to eat it without having to resort to cramming it down your neck at maximum speed.

I hour sleep in 48, set of Jessies.

Do the Royal Marines have army ranks throughout or is it mixture of army and navy? Since they are basically part of the navy why have army ranks at all?

They have Amry ranks throughout the RM, as I understand it, the RM came into being before the official "Army" as it could be recognised today, so the Amry copied the bootnecks. Happy to be corrcted on that though, as I'm not entirely sure I've got that right.

Just watched it.

Mobile phones eek

The guy who quit before attesting - well done, that took balls, especially on telly. I wonder if it was set up.

They seemed to be more molly coddled than I was, and I was only TA.

Just to be pedantic they are not actually a part of the RN (if thats what you mean). They are part of the Naval Service, which is made up of the RM and RN.

Even when on board a ship they operate seperately from the ships crew, so there really isn't an issue with them having a different rank structure.

They have the Lance Corporal rank which the Army also have. The rank isn't recognised by the RN or RAF, who only have Leading Rate and Corporal, equivalent to the Army/RM Corporal.

Up until very recently (last 10-15 years) RM wereunable to become Yeoman Warders at the Tower of London. This was their oath of allegiance was to the Admiralty, not the Monarch.

It's archane and takes about 300 years to decipher. If you're not RN/RM/Army (or ex-) then it's probably best to accept it and move on. Or start a different thread. Or visit www.arrse.co.uk or www.navy-net.co.uk

The RN doesn't have Corporal as a rank, its Leading Hand/Petty Officer/Chief Petty Officer etc for ratings

Sounds like a couple of people on here have been to Lympstone, a couple of other questions spring to mind:

2) What's with the showing them how to wash, shave and iron. Are your average late teen / early twenty year old that useless these days?
Personal Hygiene is a massive issue in the forces. All stems from, if you have high personal hygiene and high standards of kit, then it relates to being in the field, you look after yourself so you don't bring your team down.

By having bad personal hygiene, if you can't look after yourself, how can your best buddy rely on you to save his life if you can't look after yourself, ergo, your team have to start looking after you, you become a liability. Can you trust that person with your life, if they can't look after there own st!

If you have high standards, it becomes second nature.

One difference is, a LCPL is a Junior NCO in the Army and is able to charge soldiers who are not NCO's and can attend the Cpls Mess if there is one. SAC, etc do not have the power to charge juniors. But it is all tagged to how the different arms of the services operate, a Lcpl has a role in a section

Must be a new thing, when did the Rock Apes/SRDG introduce that? Always remember (when serving in Joint Unit) pointing out to uppity SACs and JTs that SAC is NOT a Command Rank and nor does it grant access to the Cpls' Mess.

Back to the thread; I wonder what tonight's episode will bring...?

Closest I've been was when I met a Lieutenant while skydiving. I nearly bought his rig, but he warned me that I'd get loads of grief as his main was in RM colours. Couldn't be arsed with that! He was nice enough, I would imagine he went straight in with a comission (if such a thing is possible within the RM. I have no idea.)
OT : are you still into skydiving?

I had a brand new rig that was kind of stolen from me a few years ago but I'd like to try and get it back.

Orange Javelin container, Orange/White Sabre 190 main.

Unfortunately not. I pumped a load of cash into it - AFF plus consolidations and future jumps - & enjoyed it immensely. I was looking at getting a 2nd hand rig (as new ones are v. expensive, with good reason!), and then, whilst I didn't run out of the amount of disposable needed, I couldn't justify the cost of entry any more. It was that or chucking money at cars. Guess which won smile. Been idly thinking about taking it up again from time to time.

I'm sorry to hear about your rig - that's a large setback, especially iirc, Javelin containers and Sabres were at the upper end of the scale. How did it happen?

Thanks.

It's a long and boring story however.

You're right though, it was a decent rig, also had CYPRES fitted.
