Because it is pointless, doesn't add to the program and appeals to lowest common denominator LOLs.

One is accustomed such antics on Top Gear, but I (and I'm sure I speak for others also) expect better of James May.
So if I found it funny then I am a lowest common denominator? Wow.
It undeniable that such scenes are added for entertainment purposes to keep those who struggle with their attention span. As mentioned, it has become the norm on TG, however I've always felt James May to be above that.

It appears you are in a minority to find the shooting scene funny. Make of that what you will.

On topic - this week's felt a 30 minute programme which they had to pad out to an hour in a hurry. Either that or Andy Wilman scribbled on the script.
My feeling also. yes

Episode 1 was excellent (dropped Lada excepted) whereas Episode 2 seemed to struggle somewhat for content. Shooting scene and race segment were fillers that added very little.

I didn't find it funny, I did find people's OTT reaction to the scene amusing, however. Make of that what you will.

I enjoyed episode one but episode 2 just looked like a top gear clone with crap races and blowing stuff up aimed at simpletons.

It's a shame as James May can do some great TV. I suppose if top gear is so popular, then the easy thing to do is churn out more of it.
Agreed, the first episode was very good however this one wasn't a patch on it! Hopefully the last one on Sunday will make up for it.

Hardly OTT.

The point is, at the most fundamental level this was an interesting show with good content. James May is a decent presenter. We (as self-confessed car geeks) probably relate more to James May and his penchant for details and technicalities than Clarkson's obsession with POWER and EXPLOSIONS. As such, the addition of such scenes which added little (if at all) to content were very much out of keeping with the rest of the show.

If a show is good, it doesn't need to resort to cheap/easy laughs to entertain.

As parents often say: "I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed".

I enjoyed the episode despite the needless blowing up of the 2CV and Renault 4. The race through Tokyo was very entertaining. It did feel at times like a Top Gear segment but I always enjoy James May as a presenter.

It seemed as though it started as a Top Gear segment (or several) then was fleshed out into a series - it would explain the unnecessary destruction of cars and the repeated references to Hammond, Clarkson and TG. A pity as the basic idea was sound.

Hmmm - it's just set me wondering - could this be a reaction the the "bridge" incident ? Clarkson & Hammond were in that, but May wasn't (as I recall). Perhaps they've edited some of his material into a little series while they let the dust settle ?

(I love a good conspiracy theory)

I like it. Interesting to see an RPG pass through the window of the R4 at least three times before registering a proper hit.

I do think that they missed a trick by not digging out some of the more 'sports' based kei cars whilst in Japan. No Honda Beat, Suzuki Capuchino or Mazda AZ1/Suzuki Cara?

My god I'd have one in an instant.

I actually didnt have any issue with the scene. As for once when it came to guns and explosions they didnt just detonate a bag of diesel and claim it was an RPG they were actually putting rounds and RPGs through the vehicles.

Shame to waste perfectly good vehicles if thats what they were but I doubt it.

The Kei car segment was a little underplayed and they could have chosen some more interesting examples but good fun overall.

He also got through the whole programme without saying the word Mini. Yes he had the model car at the start and walked past one at the end, but he didn't say the word hehe .

quite enjoyed the programme up until the shoot the car moment. . .and does James only own one shirt ??
If you were paying attention in the French push me pull you car there were two identical shirts. smile

I found the shoot up quite informative, during the zombie apocalypse I now know to aim a little low when using an rpg.

Quite enjoyed it so far, last weeks episode was better but last nights was still watchable. Loved the sight of the Kei fire engine! You would be disappointed if that turned up to deal with your burning house!

The James May shirt thing. Do they not do that for continuity purposes? I remember in the days of Clive James travel shows. He said he had about 20 identical blue shirts in his luggage so it made editing the shows easier and they could film bits out of sequence.

In James Mays case though I would be surprised if they found more than one shirt that looked like that.

May could just be a proper bloke. Buys several identical shirts in one go (after having found something that fits) to avoid going shopping too frequently.

I've just watched it now.

Whilst the destruction of the 2CV and R4 was tedious, it's not something that got my knickers in a twist. It was just "meh". Likewise the Noodle race. Just rather pointless padding & filler.

I thought the Kei cars got good coverage although there was a huge gap between the 1970's and the 2000's that maybe a bonkers nutcase late 80's / early 90's Kei could have covered. I seem to remember they produced some mad turbocharged ones (and possibly a super-turbo) that were very much not in the spirit of the rules. But if you know your Kei cars, you'll know that the little clip of Clarkson was of one such Kei. I think it was a Daihatsu or maybe a Mitsubishi.

On the whole I quite enjoyed it, although it wasn't as good as last week's. I think they could easily have dropped the filler and gone into more detail on the history because it's a truly vast subject.

Overall, it wasn't half as dire as many on this thread have made it out to be.
