Supercar segment seemed out of kilter and pointless - what was the point of it again?

Not that I didn't enjoy the segment; I would rather a show which had Metcalfe and May talk about cars as BBC4 has Al Murray and co talk about British War movies.

Yeah, I'm vice chairman of the XR owners club, we tried hard to find one. But only had 3 days notice and they were filming mid week in November. No one else near by had their car taxed and on the road (and was willing to let someone else launch their car).

Considering how iconic the Kilner jar is, that's actually quite interesting. And inventing something is rather different from buying something.

Also, you seem to be saying that what your great, great, great, great grandfather did is automatically the most interesting thing one's family can ever do.

Edit:

Remember though that the Kilner jar his family made was the screw top jar not the spring clip seal jar that is called a Kilner today.
That's a little like calling all vacuum cleaners "Hoovers" though.
The Kilner principle relies on the jars being filled and capped when hot/warm, so the subsequent cooling action then causes the contents and any air in the neck of the jar to contract thus drawing the lid tightly on to the lip of the jar.
The screw-cap bit is simply a retaining ring to hold the lid in place whilst cooling occurs.
(I'll get me own coat thanks)

Fair enough, and well done for stepping up. Nice to see one, even if "slightly" played around with!

That's pretty crappy planning on their part; expecting someone to jump in with almost no notice.

Nope. Not at all.

Clearly commonsense is not a requirement for working in TV then. smile

Show me a tax funded establishment(jobs for the boys) institution that would utilise common sense.

Bunch of girls :P LOL

....I have no issues with my car being driven by the drivers, its all insured and they are actually very respectful of the fact that it is someone's car and not something that belongs to a manufacturer.

Get em out there and used I say smile

You do realise that there are more companies making television programmes than just the BBC? And a lot of BBC programmes are contracted out anyway. Including, ironically, Top Gear (at least until recently).

As Top Gear have demonstrated time and again with burnt out clutches and shagged tyres on privately-owned vehicles lent in good faith, with not even a penny given to the owner in recompense.

I wouldn't lend my car to anybody remotely associated with Top Gear.

Agreed.
At risk of digressing in to a not-ever-allowed-on-PH Top Gear slagging, and at something of a tangent...
When "They" visited Kandahar some years ago to cheer up the troops, the funniest thing they could do when asked to sign various TG paperbacks people had out there was to draw an arrow at the cover photo of whoever's book it was and write "Ct" in thick black marker pen.

Well they have used my 205 numerous times now and never had an issue they have paid me expenses even put me up in a hotel a couple of years back for the DVD filming car is always transported and well looked after.

I have had proper agreements signed (as well as non disclosures) with them for the car to be full insured if the worst comes to the worst and they have always agreed that if anything gets bust they will fund the repairs.

Think that was the one with the little map reading light on the dash, and a matt black bonnet ACE.

I have often wondered about car programmes using owner's cars. A day filming in the track is going to impact o tyres and brakes. Do you get cash to buy new tyres and pads?

Thanks for that link.

Having watched the programme all I can say is what a tragic, shallow, narcissistic bunch of men they appeared to be.

It's got headlight washers OMG let him pass! Taking the badge off the Merc because even though people respect you and move out of your way you still feel inferior. Embarrased by the coat hanger you use. Did millions die in the second world war to free the world for fat arsed men to drive around thinking and spouting this st?

The only one I warmed to was beardy in his Beemer. I say warmed to, that's a bit of an exaggeration.

I suppose these days the sons of these men cry and get upset about ///M and S-Line badges.

The world is very different now. Credit is cheap, so almost anyone can if they wish out do their workmates or neighbours with a 40K car bought in the knock.

Over the moon with the Cavalier. I is for important. Oh dear oh dear.

The James May series was good. Destroying the cars was crass.

Not in my case, but it only took them about an hour and a half and wasn't that hard on the tyres. The brakes are 4pot reyland bells and rotors so they probably didn't us much. I got fuel, plenty of tea, lunch and the car immortalised on tele. Albeit with another chap changing his trousers on my drivers seat. That will haunt me.

This was company car driving in the 1990s. Fair play to the manufacturers -- making a bunch of middle management sales guys go green-eyed over a silver stripe on the bumpers rather than a red stripe (various levels of Sierra trim).
