Not in my case, but it only took them about an hour and a half and wasn't that hard on the tyres. The brakes are 4pot reyland bells and rotors so they probably didn't us much. I got fuel, plenty of tea, lunch and the car immortalised on tele. Albeit with another chap changing his trousers on my drivers seat. That will haunt me.
Yes I could see why that would disturb you. It would me :-)carl_w said:
This was company car driving in the 1990s. Fair play to the manufacturers -- making a bunch of middle management sales guys go green-eyed over a silver stripe on the bumpers rather than a red stripe (various levels of Sierra trim).
Oh definately. I remember the Ford Orion (The one based on the MK 3 Escort). It came in Ghia trim and Ghia Injection, which gave it apart from fuel injection a red stripe in the bumper. Ironically I imagine the red plastic strip was a cheaper part than the chrome on the lesser model. It did get very silly with the MK 2 Granada at the top end of the range. 2.8 Ghia, 2.8 Ghia X and with space for badges getting scare with an even longer name, the Granada 2.8 Ghia X Executive.
It still goes on today I guess. The grey plastic letters on the back of my car proclaim Freelander SD4 HSE. Not sure what SD4 means. Diesel 4 cylinder? The S? And HSE is the trim but it sounds like some sort of organisation that closes building sites after a migrant worker falls off a tower crane.
In contrast my MG MGF 1.8 MPI to give it it's full title only wears two octagon badges, no model name , no engine designation. A 1990s sales rep's nightmare!
I missed the second episode and by the sounds of it, I didn't miss much.
Overall I enjoyed it, but it didn't need the Top Gear garbage for the groundlings. It should have been above that.
BTW, where was that huge paved area at the end of the 3rd episode that the Golfs were driving on?

Thanks for that link.
Having watched the programme all I can say is what a tragic, shallow, narcissistic bunch of men they appeared to be.
It's got headlight washers OMG let him pass! Taking the badge off the Merc because even though people respect you and move out of your way you still feel inferior. Embarrased by the coat hanger you use. Did millions die in the second world war to free the world for fat arsed men to drive around thinking and spouting this st?
The only one I warmed to was beardy in his Beemer. I say warmed to, that's a bit of an exaggeration.
I suppose these days the sons of these men cry and get upset about ///M and S-Line badges.
Do you think it's real and not scripted / acted ? I always assumed it was "a satirical look at" type program.Having watched the programme all I can say is what a tragic, shallow, narcissistic bunch of men they appeared to be.

That's gotta be Steve Coogan in character, with Olivia Colman as his wife. No one could actually be so pretentious and yet tragic at the same time.

That never occurred to me. It makes sense that it a Mackey take. Afterall some of them were being rather scathing about their employers. If you like BMW drivers, you should watch this segment - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPBpktyYBnY
Does anyone know for sure if it is real?

I have often wondered about car programmes using owner's cars. A day filming in the track is going to impact o tyres and brakes. Do you get cash to buy new tyres and pads?

Ditto it was so wet at Rockingham there was no real wear to the tyres or brakes....fed and watered all day, car transported in a covered truck and they covered the fuel that was used in the 205 and also for me driving up to Rockingham and back to be there.

...it wasn't a real race?
But it was on TV and st.
It was great to see an XR4x4 used rather than the usual Cosworths. That's usually all the media seem to know about Sierras. I'm not sure I'd have let them borrow mine either, but then she's a rather delicate little old thing now. It would have been interesting to see them both do a lap of Dunsfold.
And to the above poster, st rep cars from the 1980s are still more entertaining and better to drive than 90% of the 1.9 turbodiesels that flood our roads now.

was disappointed he didn't look to the future with electric cars.
It was a 3 part serious, for goodness sake. I was amazed he covered as much as he did in 3 episodes.I think it could have been easily expanded to double that. In fact, cut loose the Top Gear bks, it could have been a multi-series programme.
Ah well.
