I've had more than a few 1st and 2nd Generation Celicas and the engines and gearboxes are exceptional for their time, but the steering IS the worst part of the package. It's more than good enough for general driving, but if you want to press on it WILL end in terminal understeer into the nearest hedge. It's easily cured, thankfully.
Funnily enough one of my friends from back then and I were talking about the program yesterday. We remembered the Celica and the novelty of the 5-speed box. He too remembers the steering being quite vague on a bumpy A-road. Could well have been the car I guess - it certainly wasn't in the same condition as the one Mr May was in. They were pretty cheap in the mid 80s but a decade old nearly.

Sierra was basically a Cortina in drag. Montego and Maestro engines- were no worse than the ageing Ford units- and they got EFi well before their rivals.
Not quite. It had IRS and a 5-speed gearbox. Same old 4-pot pintos up front though.
I believe it was around 1986 when 5-speed gearbox was standardized across the range -some 4 yrs after launch

This programme is doing for the upcoming show on Amazon exactly what The Getaway isn't doing for the new Top Gear

Enjoyed that as the previous one.

Proper lolled at the Audi window.

Don't the orginal Mk1s always look better, so much purer and as the designers wanted.

The off-roading bit went on too long for me personally but I enjoyed the Quattro and Impreza bits after
