Because although TV documentaries lead you to believe the streets are paved with gold and encrusted with gems (which in certain places they almost nearly are) and that everyone swans around in top end, brand new luxury motors, there are a lot of poorer people there as well. These will be immigrants working in construction and service jobs working for the Dubai equivalent of min. wage.
I get that (funnily enough I read an article in National Geographic the other day about the "guest" workforce), what I dont understand was why they'd need several tonnes of old random engines? By all accounts, most people working in Dubai wouldn't be able to afford any sort of car. The engines they were stashing also seemed pretty indiscriminate. My OH reckoned they'd either be used to be melted down & the steel used in construction, or the engines turned into some sort of generator to provide power for where the workers live.
The Power Plant idea could be the reason. Petrol is dirt cheap there so just run them all the time until they drop and then plug in a new engine and away you go again. If more workers move into the area just give them another couple of engines - no problems with mains cabling and network capacity.

One of the better reality programmes.Enjoying the daftness so far!
Agreed, i like the cheeky chappy wide boy working class humour. Although the owner must be minted keeping the scrappy and a high maintenance wife and still living in big house.Imagine them doing a doc at the Morgan spares and breakers. It just wouldn't have the same impact

Find it funny the guy drives round in that old Hyundia when he's clearly rolling in money! The Lexus and Amarok wouldn't have been cheap
I don't think they rolling in it, that house up north is maybe 400k max, few cars £50k on a good day, could all come crashing down if they get muscled in on or scrap values plummet, too many overheads and leakage from incompetent staff. Wonder what hmrc would have to say about cash in hand payments, doubt any employers n.i is being payed either. Finally got round to watching this on iplayer, quite enjoyed the first 3 episodes. Yes there's some obviously-contrived "drama" (the payday bit, the open day, the barney with his mrs), but the banter is good entertainment, as is watching the rough-arsed nature of scrapping cars.
I'm surprised how much of a car is crushed, I would have expected seats, glass, carpets, interior electrical gubbins etc to be salvaged.

What's Eastenders doing on now. Is the Beeb running late or something?
ETA: Scratch that, I think there must be a gremlin in the TV - I pressed one on the remote and EastEnders came on; pressed one again(after several minutes of EE)and to my surprise Scrappers is on. Is there a +1 on BBC 1 or something - most confusing!

Drinking on the job, imo it was handled well.
I've had the odd beer on the job. Although the fact I'm a designer and occasionally work from home i can't really sack myself. Worst thing that could happen is the odd spillage.Doubt it's the first time he'd done it but he was stupid even doing it considering they employ a health and safety bloke on site.
