I think it might have lost some impact because it was such a huge film and I'd guess most of us have watched it more than a few times:

Especially during his escape, the almost emotionless way he destroys the guards.
Absolutely. Pure psychopath, no needs but his own, kills people like we would open a packet of crisps when hungry.

Another vote for Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs.

I've only seen the first half as my wife was so affected we had to leave the cinema.

Danny the drug dealer (Ralph Brown) in 'Withnail and I' - funny yet creepiness in abundance!

I remember seeing this at the cinema, and many times since.
Was out a short time before Cape Fear, which everyone said was going to be as good, but did not live up to they hype IMHO.

Paddy Constantine in Dead Man's shoes is incredible.

The delivery of "you ya c**t" in this scene is perfect, proper "don't fk with me" psychopathic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9iGtltgji0

and then my favourite ever threat in a film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wWX-pgJwKM

I've never 'got' this one personally. The film passed me by as I never thought him remotely convincing as a 'hard man'. I'd say he hasn't the physical presence but its not that, Joe Pesci and the guy pictured above from Red Riding were unsettlingly threatening. Paddy just isn't, for me.

Yep I've said this before about this film. I usually get accused of being an internet hard man when I do smile.

It's just not convincing if you are going to do, don't talk, do.

The rant in front of the huge top guy with his crew watching is just laughable. If you are weak you get taken advantage of. You wouldn't let people see you disrespected like that. Every skag head in the county would be trying to rob you. Because you don't have the balls to fight back.

Not sure it counts and don't laugh but the face huggers in alien. Took me years to watch that film in a single sitting because of those little buggers. In terms of people then one that always got me when I started watching mature films was the Anthony Spillotro character in casino. The constant casual violence is just alien to me.

I watched DRIVE for the second time and thats when you can absorb the detail.

Ryan Gosling was chilling in the way he changed from being a nice guy kissing his g/f in the lift, to suddenly killing the hitman standing next to him in a most violent and unrestrained way.

Other pretty gritty moments, including retribution for the garage owner by razor.

The film gets an 8/10 by the way.

Very much TODAY but the Dr Who Scene with Peter Capaldi saying "I may have to kill you I have poured you a drink" AND the " no point in both of us getting caught " line
Obviously only part of a performance but quite chilling.

He comes across too much like a comedy/camp/Bond villain.

I remember sitting in the cinema and watching everyone shrink back into their seats at this. A very powerful performance by a superb actor.

Ed Harris.

In light of recent news, Richard Attenborough as John Christie in 10 Rillington Place is up there as a serious take on a less Hollywood and more real life criminal portrayal that chills.
