Robert Helpmann's performance as the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was pretty damn scary.
Agreed. Far too menacing for a film like that I always thought. It scared the living whatnot out of me as a kid and my 2 lads would watch from behind their fingers when they were little. There was an English actor called Colin Jeavons who looked very similar. Even today, if something comes on with him in it, it makes me shudder.

And would you believe, he used to appear in children's programmes?

I find the Don Logan character in Sexy Beast to be one of the most convincing "utter bd" portrayals I have ever seen. The first time I saw the film I was speechless, when the film was over I pressed play again and watched it again.
Found him comical tbh and not a patch on Joe Pesci in GoodfellasMr Gearchange said:

I thought Plan B was pretty convincing as a nasty piece of work in 'Harry Brown'
Indeed - that was one of the bleakest and most disturbing films I have ever seen -stayed with me for weeks. His role in that film was improvised in large parts - particularly his interview scene. I suspect he might not be that far from his character Neil Maskell in Utopia was very good as the shambolic shuffling psychopath Arbie

Bob Hoskins, Long good Friday, "The mafia? I've st 'em."
Especially the last few minutes of the car journey when he realises the IRA have got him. See all the emotions going through his mind.

^^^^ good shout, utter psycho.
"row row row your boat....."
As for chilling performances....
The first time I saw Pulp fiction, Jules and that speech which has been done to death over the years but the bit before that when he just casually shoots the kid on the couch - totally callous and unexpected.
Scum - Ray Winston - "I'm the daddy".
Fonda in One Upon a Time in America...
"the kid doesn't know your name Frank"
"he does now......"
I think some performances are more chilling when they are out of form or previous character, Williams in one hour photo is a classic example.

Tom Hardy in The Take.
This, plays a vile character that deserves to be dead very convincingly! The German film downfall, that mother who gave her children those pills stuck with me after and showed how some people really thought a Germany without hitler wouldn't be worth living in
The most chilling and memorable for me is still Christoph waltz in IG, after seeing him in that and Django I believe he is the best actor out there at the moment
