I can highly recommend The West Wing. Brilliant writing and I learned more about US politics from that show than just about anything else.

Thanks for the suggestions. Has boardwalk empire finished yet ? I heard that's pretty good too.

No Season 4 is being released next week I think. And Season 5 is due out on TV September ish time.

I'm really enjoying it so far.

There is a great TV critic in the US called Alan Sepinwall. http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching
He wrote a book called The Revolution Was Televised about just how fricking fantastic TV has become.

Each chapter explores the history behind the creation of a different great show.
The list is:
The Sopranos
Oz
The Wire
Deadwood
The Shield
Lost
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
24
Battlestar Galactica
Friday Night Lights
Mad Men
Breaking Bad

I think this is a very good starter list. Although I never watched Buffy. (Alan is an admitted Whedon acolyte so you can perhaps forgive him that one.)

His blog is so widely read in the industry that the showrunners/producers often contribute in the comments or even on their own blogs to try to explain any criticisms he has.
Reading his episode recaps on say Fargo really added to the experience, IMHO.

Weeds. Very armite but I loved the darkness of it.

As per my last post, I've now watched the 1st series of The Shield... And I love it. It's just up my street.

Apparently the first series is the worst and it just keeps getting better, so there's more to look forward to smile

Probably only in hindsight compared to the others. I recently rewatched a few seasons of The Shield as it had been added to Netflix and it's a lot better than I remembered and I loved it then. Great series.

Battlestar Galactica. For me there's not been much on before or since that was as good. If you get the box-set, make sure you get the pilot episode (3 hour epic) as it sets the scene properly. If you jump right in to Ep1 Season1, you'll be immediately confused a bit.
I still have a sour taste because of the last season. Going all religious, couldn't really stand it tbh. Loved the show for the rest. Olmos was the boss!

Dexter - well, almost, if you discount the final season where the writers (quite literally) lost the plot on an otherwise top notch series.

Top tips.

The Shield first ep (pilot) is crap.. don't let it put you off. Gets better and better throughout. Goggins!

The Wire takes a while to get into... (and understand the accents) stick with it if you can.

Dexter falls apart towards the end, there is a very nice end series 4. Stop there unless you feel you have to.

True Detective is fab, but you need to slow down to watch it. Very rewarding if you can.

West Wing & The Newsroom are different to all the above - one needs to suspend ones views of things USA (if, like most, you have them) and get into the dazzling writing by Aaron Sorkin

I decided to start House of Cards last night (US version). Only watched one episode but it seems pretty good on that limited viewing.

I generally get borded of TV series way before they finish, however one series which held me to the end, all 8 seasons was House.

Suits seasons 1-3 are great, and I'm waiting for season 4 to air next year.

I'm currently up to season 3 of Breaking Bad after many recommendations thumbup

It must have been the way the plot varied so much each episode.

He almost never berated his team while the patient lied and then solved it after an unconnected incident allowed him to connect the diagnostic dots... hardly ever. Lupus. wink

Yes the form of the medical diagnosis was usually quite predictable, but I love House's character and how he dealt with the season long plots, rather than each week’s medical quandary. Although plenty of the episodes had great (if far fetched) stories. Plus there was some brilliant writing in there.

As for lupus, I once saw a man wearing a t-shirt which just said “It’s Not Lupus” on it hehe
