Grand Designs - New Series
Discussion
I really liked this one, probably my favourite of the series so far. Thought both cladding types worked really well.
Loads of really cool detail that you'd only really get from an architect/designer build - the stairs which had been sandblasted, then rusted, then lacquered were very nice.
On the show I thought the master bedroom looked quite small but in the picture posted above, it actually looks pretty big. It would be interesting to see a floorplan as I couldn't properly get my head around the layout.

Where is this picture of the master bed you refer to?Loads of really cool detail that you'd only really get from an architect/designer build - the stairs which had been sandblasted, then rusted, then lacquered were very nice.

Slightly OT, what's that (violin?) music they have played a few times? Anyone know?

Loved the finished article, but can't help but think it would have been easier to build a steel frame from the outset. They pretty much had to build a steel frame around the containers anyway.
But I think the location was everything for this build - in 99% of locations it would have looked terrible (or at least out of place)
I'm also getting a bit fed up with the "creative accounting" going on
£10k on containers
£10k on welding containers etc
£16k on bath
£30k on kitchen
that's just over for half the budget, and doesn't take into account getting services to site, the metal panels cladding the outside, insulation, stairways, windows (these must have cost around £15k, given the amount of glass), flooring, studwork, plastering, electrical and plumbing... the list goes on.
If he managed to get that lot for £64k then he is truly a wheeler-dealer of the highest order.

Yes, I thought the same too about the steel work. Can't believe it would be any more expensive to just build a steel frame from scratch. The container sides were effectively surplus to requirements seeing as they cut quite a few large holes in in them to fit the windows and clad over everything else.boyse7en said:

And don't forget the ground works and costs to quarry all that basalt out of the ground.£10k on containers

10k per container (2nd fix but not kitted out with stuff)
5k crane
1k transportation per module (not knowing the distance)
Services already on-site so just tapping off
Id imagine alot of plant and operators already on site so those costs are forgotten about
What i dobt get is how he got a mortgage on it when companies in england wont touch you, unless he got a business loan?
