Had a quick scan through, don't think anyone's mentioned Taxi Driver. It was shown at my local cinema a few years ago and on that big sound system...wow.

Superfly.

Pretty Bad Blaxploitation movie but one of the best film soundtracks ever by Curtis Mayfield.

Writtem by John Denver in the 1960s. A hit for Peter, Paul and Mary at the time.

Having looked at the one's you mentioned Eric, I am quite surprised how many there are that became (or were previously) 'chart hits' I guess the ultimate in that genre would be either Grease or Saturday Night Fever.

Personally I prefer the big screen orchestrated themes, they evoke more emotion in me.

Also, to whoever it was that mentioned Dances with Wolves, have a star...that's one of my favourite films!

The charts in the 1960s were quite broad - because a wide age group was buying singles. The kids were buying the pop and rock groups - the adults were buying what was sometimes referred to as "easy listening" , usually by classic crooners - such as Andy Williams or Matt Monroe. If a song was linked to a big bidget feature film, it stood a very good chance of doing well in the singles chart.

A Clockwork Orange
Georgy Girl

Not a theme tune but 'The Self-Preservation Society' song featured in the Italian Job is always instanly recognisable and is never heard anywhere else but in this movie

Midnight Cowboy

The Graduate (identified by the tune "Mrs Robinson")

Star Wars

All the Indiana Jones films
I'll give you Indy and Star Wars, but the others are more songs that have defined the film, not the first thing that enters (one's) your head when you hear it.

Let's try this...close your eyes and tell me what film it is (or at least the type of film)

There again, I've just added another...James Bond!

Of course, I could tell you what the film was. Moreover, I could tell you who the composer was; John Barry - for me - was not just one of the greatest composers of "modern" classical music, but maybe the greatest writer of film theme tunes.

Sadly missed is JB.

ETA : Dances With Wolves was a John Barry composition

Gone with the Wind

Probably not familiar to many but once you've heard it, it lodges in a dim recess ready for instant recall.

I had a grand party statement / joke that no one could ever hum the Star Wars theme then the Indians Jones theme straight after; that they'd always be confused.

But then loads of people managed it and my statement / joke / theory fell down.

But still... It's canny hard.

Fight Club.

Fight club doesn't come straight to mind. Or is it just me?

I don't really credit films that use old established pop songs as their themes. The song has already had a life of its own so is not really associated with the film.

For instance, the Buddy Holly song "Peggy Sue Got Married" was used for the film "Peggy Sue Got Married" (quite logically).

But when I hear the song it doesn't automatically remind me of the film - simply because it had been in existence for 27 years before it got used in the film (which I actually like).
