Until 10 years ago the Archers was a bit of a 'joke' for me and not something i ever listened to. Then i met a woman who liked it and it just so happens that we almost always end up leaving a race track at about 6:45-7pmish most Sunday nights so, given she had spent a day racing with me, I would have no issue with listening to 15 minutes of Archers.

Bloody well ended up hooked and asking her to go through all the history and so on so i a fairly clued up on the last 30-40 odd years.

In the last 6 months or so she and i have gradually been listening to it less and less. Whilst one cannot say that the Rob and Helen story was something that the Archers should not have done it is certainly out of character and much more in line with the Brookside, Eastenders, Corrie mob - shows i detest and have no interest in despite trying at various times over the years. Then, knowing a little of the situation i found myself getting increasingly wound up by it and the literary liberties being taken. Characters acting totally out of character, obvious flaws ignored, the number of times one was being asked to ignore 20-30 years of historical knowledge of the characters and likely actions of parties involved was frustrating. Then there were the inaccuracies as to how hospitals and mental health appointments and so on are dealt with that started to get to me.

I listened in on Friday night and was very pleased but last night i didn't bother and mowed the lawn, leaving the Mrs to listen in, as i had had a lovely weekend and didn't want to spoil it by spending another Sunday night shouting at the radio.

May well have to listen again tonight to catch up with it all properly but like others would far rather he was seriously injured than dead, if for no other reason that that i feel it will go very badly for Helen and Henry if he dies, whereas she might just 'get away with it' or not have to serve time if he is still alive.

It is a shame in some ways that things played out the way they did on last nights instalment. I will miss tonight's due to an appointment with my bone breaker by will get the full low down off the Mrs when I get home.

Slightly annoyed that now we are going to have a year or more of Helen's case going through the courts I suspect, with all the child and un-born child issues involved. I was rather hoping for a line to be drawn, not for this to get even more drawn out.

Strange story line for "an everyday story of country folk" but the Archers has got far more soap operaish in recent years. If they are going to go down the route of murder then they should a proper job of the story and have Helen and Tom dispose of Robs body by chopping it up; loading into the sausage maker and feeding the results to pigs at Bridge Farm.

I agree with both of the above posts. The Archers have become rather Eastenders like over the last few months. And by God haven't the BBC milked it too it's been on Woman's Hour, World at One and probably a few I haven't heard.

That may be because the producer (until very recently, I believe) used to work on Eastenders.

For something a little lighter, I've been listening in the mornings to a show called "Farming Today"

It's like a lightweight and fictional version of The Archers and without Barwick Green....

Addict status. Been listening for 25+ years. Don't do telly soaps but radio allows one to do jobs (loading the dishwasher etc) at the same time - TV is just a time thief.

The current storyline is but one of many where unpleasant 'urban' life has rudely intruded into the rural idyll - where everyone rubs along and nobody is poor (as it used to be).

I think they have always tried out strange and novel ideas - Roy's acid attack on Usha springs to mind.

Then there's the economics of it all - an organic farm that supports many family members, plus helpers, recently a retail outlet in town, whilst just down the road David and Ruth can barley afford to pay daughter on their £7.5 million farm. It's all bonkers.

I'll be tuning in again tonight at 7:03 just to catch up...

I am guessing some of Rob's finest character building moments will get lost in the storyline: foxhunt saboteur scene and him pretty much causing the Ambridge floods.... unless Charlie returns to give evidence and Shula fesses up the truth.

I am sure those two events will rear their heads as it's bound to get messy.
