Up to 21 years? Though I'm no expert.

I think I might have been a tad judicious in my 'spoilering of the sentencing. It is now after the event so anyone not having watched the programme shouldn't really be looking in on this thread yet. smile

Wife's cousin got life for attempted murder, mind you he tortured the bloke for his PIN number then stabbed him.

Do they prepare the translators ahead of time with the possible content of the interview?

She looked really uncomfortable at times with what was put before her which was pretty gruesome - she is *only* there to translate after all - maybe they know what to expect??

They will have both sides of the story to a degree. They will be told brief offence details by the officers. Then they will sit in on consultation between the suspect and his brief. They are just normal people after all they may just normally attend shop lifters and other low level crime. So they may not be that used to that level of violence.

Not usually, no. Interpreters are often booked at a moment's notice and then just get on with the job. Unless they've changed it in the last few years.

It's fascinating to watch a good interpreter in action, I never get bored with watching them. smile

You would think the program makers would have the sense to tell us the difference between GBH, wounding and attempted murder.

It would also be interesting to know whether he pleaded guitly or not - it said he was found guilty so I presume it was a full on trial hence the long sentence.

Also the DS isn't cut out for TV - trying to hard to play up the the cameras IMO.
