One thing I do like is how the word "zombie" has never been used in any episode. Our group obviously call them "walkers" and each other group they meet has a different name, but the Z-word is never used. Presumably this is deliberate from the writers, but why?
I watched an episode of the 'making of' (or similar) and this was explained. The word 'Zombie' is never used because in TWD World there has never been a concept of zombies prior to the outbreak of 'walkers', so people were totally unaware of anything to do with them until it actually happened. That's a rubbish reason. The living dead, undead etc have been part of stories for hundreds if not thousands of years, returning from the dead etc (zombie Jesus?) they may not have used the word zombie though but that word has been around a long time as well. Haitian it seems but I found references back to 1700's in a quick google.

Standard in most zombie films thoughBullett said:
Yeah, weird isn't it?
But then in a lot of 'zombie' films they are not zombies either - normally infected. I am Legend they were more like vampires than zombies.
I guess it's to increase their threat since the protagonists initially don't know what's going on or how to stop it, but that does of course mean the audience is waiting for them to catch up. I don't count the 28 Days/Weeks ones as zombies since they were still alive and could be killed by normal means (still great films though). Long time since I've seen Legend but wasn't it an airborne virus? But then in a lot of 'zombie' films they are not zombies either - normally infected. I'm really struggling to stay with TWD after a reasonable start to this season.
Finally I thought there was a 'greater mission' with a bigger story but no, it's the same-old, same-old. I don't really give a st if the characters live or die.

Wasn't mad scientist bloke introduced along with the other 2 as soldiers, whose only task was to make sure he got to Washington alive?
Yes, except now he's been shown to be a Walter Mitty character who was lying to get protection.
It would have been a better story to actually have followed that potential line - that they do have someone who can cure the zombie infection and the story behind how they go about fixing the world. To not have that as an option now kinda removes the focus.

Modern film 'zombies' are a creation of George A Romero and fairly recent. Zombies before his breakthrough film, Night of the Living Dead were quite different, and nominally connected to religion/magic.
Also I believe it was the first film to feature a black man as the hero, with the woman you assume will be the lead spending most of it catatonic with shock and the wholesome young couple getting killed halfway though. Then there's the ending and the reason he was shot rather open to interpretation. Considering the racial tensions at the time, it's easy to forget it was groundbreaking in more was that just introducing us to modern zombieFunk said:

Are we to assume they are just ignoring the original introduction of those characters for the sake of this new story arc?It would have been a better story to actually have followed that potential line - that they do have someone who can cure the zombie infection and the story behind how they go about fixing the world. They probably decided to keep that story for season 12. Ignoring what?Squawk1066 said:
They originally introduced scientist bloke and his 2 army companions as being on a mission to get him to Washington. Giving the impression he was being protected by soldiers. Now that's suddenly not the case, or have I missed something?
I don't think anybody said they were actual soldiers. He may have acted like he used to be one. And gave you that impression?Squawk1066 said:

Ignoring what?Eugene met Abraham as we saw in the flashback last week, and told him the lie about needing to get to Washington

Save the mission stuff for Hollywood.
We are watching the journies of normal people. Curing zombies or anything of the like seems a typical Hollywood strory line and a tad predictable. For normal people...
Well then we may as well pack up and skip to the part where they're all dead.We are watching the journies of normal people. Curing zombies or anything of the like seems a typical Hollywood strory line and a tad predictable. For normal people...
