"Topical" Comedy on Radio 4

To Hull and Back feels like it was written in 1972 and not in a good way. Some great stuff on R4 Extra - I am a sucker for book quizzes like The Write Stuff - but some truly dreadful tat too. Round the Horne is fascinating in a time capsule sort of way(Ooh err, he's a queer sort..) but there aren't the words for Men from The Ministry. It sounds 1953 but ran well into the 70s at least and is just tragically lame.
I had the misfortune to hear To Hull and Back this the other evening. What a pile of crap. A lot of Radio 4 sitcoms seem to believe that a northern accent/reedy voice is the foundation of hilarity.dxg said:

If we're going for comedy dramas then Bleak Expectations is really good, scatty and weird.
Hmm, lovely cake!Bit disappointed in the new Mark Watson series. Seems to be too self-referential this time round. Has lost some of its innocence...

...but we now have the dull old Museum of Curiosity.
I used to quite like Noel Fielding, but now think he pushes the 'surreal' schtick a bit to far. There's only so many times you can trot out the 'like an 'x' doing 'y' with a 'z'...line before it gets pretty boring.Museum of Curiosity is a good format, .

Another one worth mentioning is Laura Solon's Talking and Not Talking. A good, old fashioned sketch show which, in my opinion, is always worth catching when it crops up on 4Extra...

The News Quiz has creaked its way back onto the schedules and Jeremy Hardy has lost no time in reasserting his position as the least funny man on R4.
My god the first 13 minutes were basically all brexiters hate foreigners and are racist There are no plans and we are fked. Immigrants are great full of self esteem and just want to improve Britain while your kids arnt and don't everybody should take some immigrants in.Small bit about Vaz went very easy on him was basically it's good to have a good old fashioned sex scandle instead of racist brexiters and He should be drinking tea because he's 59.
Then it was straight back to May and schools and tories hate poor people and want to divide Britain turned it off.

The anniversary edition of Radio Active was a bit of a non event. The original was great but the re-hash was a bit to much of samey-samey.
Funnily enough, I thought the New Quiz wasn't as bad as previous, Jeremy Hardly seemed to have toned it down a bit.
That other "fabulous" lefty, Mark Steele is back in Town & that was really funny ('cos it's actually topical comedy & not a soapbox).
That porridge wog Fred MacAulay is definitely a switch off event though.
