"Topical" Comedy on Radio 4

Funnily enough, I thought the New Quiz wasn't as bad as previous, Jeremy Hardly seemed to have toned it down a bit.
Not much, Brexit is still the end of the world, May and the three stooges are idiots because unwinding 40 years of enmeshment in the EU can obviously be achieved in a few hours and all those who voted to leave are obviously horrid. The audience seemed to find it funny so that's something I guess, Hardy does appear to be on a shorter leash this time.Mark Steel is utterly brilliant and I just loved the Hebden Bridge gig- being from God's own county meself like . I saw him live in Stockton on Tees - which offers rich pickings to riff upon - and he was terrific . His attempts at local accents are very funny and actually pretty good too.
Older listeners like me may recall a R4 programme called Down Your Way presented by Brian Johnston- its concept was similar to MS programme except it was not played for laughs . It was unspeakably awful. plodding rubbish - but format was right ...
Forget comedian's politics - they are either funny or they're not. More left wing comedians are funny than right wing ones but more right wing columnists/journalists are funny than left wing ones . Way of the world innit.

Oh, I don't know. My dad and I were in the car one day and Down Your Way was on, talking about Dundee, home of D.C. Thomson, publishers of the Sunday Post. Johnners pronounciation of 'Oor Wullie' was a joy to the ear.Doon Your Way on the other hand is hilarious.
Luckily, I downloaded them all when I got the chance.

Jon Holmes and Mitch Ben have been axed from The Now Show because, "we want to recast with more women and diversity."

Not simply because they weren't funny, then?http://www.chortle.co.uk/news/2016/09/27/25861/now...
I'm so conflicted. The News Quiz was actually rather good this week (sans Hardly).
They had Frankie Boyle on who was back on form.
Even Susan Calman was really funny, as she can be.
Credit where it's due - I wonder if the BBC reads this thread.
Just in case, Please carry on with the actual comedy!

I wish Susan Calman could comment on the news with mentioning her height and how much she fancies Gillian Anderson at least once in every programme. I agree though, without Hardy it's much better. They had Frankie Boyle on who was back on form.

Seriously? Is that the news quiz that's on today at 12:30
" Americans would rather vote for a racist, misogynist, bully than vote for a woman"
It wasn't a comedy line it was a rant and pure propaganda, nothing about hillery at all no reason not to vote for her other than sexism. She's already been on a sexist slant for something else.
There was another 5 minutes of absolutely disgusting slagging off of trump with audience cheering.
It's embarrassing. I don't even like trump BBC impartial my arse.

Like it or not, there's not a lot of comedy value in Hilary Clinton. Trump on the other hand is the gift that just keeps on giving." Americans would rather vote for a racist, misogynist, bully than vote for a woman"

How ironic... after years of ramming their particular brand of liberal, right on, politically correct "comedy" down our throats.http://www.chortle.co.uk/news/2016/09/27/25861/now...

There aren't many people who are capable of churning out topical/satirical/sporadically funny ditties at short notice and accompanying themselves with a bewildering array of stringed instruments; is there a female or minority Mitch Benn replacement out there? Scouse is practically a minority anyway.

Not sure it's propaganda when it's true. What part of Trump isn't a racist, misogynistic bully ?
Totally agree with that, BUT is saying "Americans" (without saying 'a few') would do that any better than saying all immigrants are benefits scroungers? The man is an utter rick with a capital P, but I know that lots of Americans (even Republicans) are as appalled at the idea of him in power as anyone with an IQ in at least double figures is!
I quite like the News Quiz, but I'm well left of the majority here I suspect (being slightly left of centre! ), but even I find trotting out the same old BS is a bit lazy... Maybe it just needs to be on less often so they can develop some new material to adapt to this week's news?

When there isn't one jibe against hillery then imo yeah it is bias. Not one comment about emails no comedy in any of that? It's a farce. Just one quick jibe about I'll get it in an email would have been a start.
Then we have bill, plus they talk about trump being a bully and others on here but 20 or 30 years plus of her documented treatment of secret service agents like st. fk sake she started out her career being kicked of the watergate enquiry
There is plent of comedy in the clintons when they choose to pick yes an admittedly easy tartget and ignore one other then yes there is an issue,
The comedy angle with Billary should be easy to get to - linking the former prez with those dress stains and his wife's continued illusion to defending women's rights...just how difficult can it be? Email server not secure - but you're only the Sec of State negotiating with umpteen competitive states so that's OK. Or suffering mild pneumonia and having metallic objects drop from your trouser hem. Weird.
However, Corbyn is every bit as big a gift as Trump.
