It's no that bad...but it's basically using the old tune and lyrics...and the logo....they wanna use up every shred of goodwill from that most awesome film...ffs nothing new, let them create and let it stand more on it's own.
Unfortunately this is the way with Hollywood these days, because of the absolutely huge sums of money involved, they almost can't afford to take any risks so there will be focus groups working on exactly that, using up every shred of good will of the originals.

To be honest I'm surprised we get any different\risky films at all and yet every year we seem to get at least a few which break the mould. Deadpool is an example, that film should never have been made but somehow they did and against all odds it's done really well in the box office, proof if it where needed that focus groups aren't the be all and end all.
I think you're looking at that through somewhat rose tinted glasses because it's always been that way. Just look at the sequels to Tim Burton's Batman, Robocop, Jaws, TMNT, Nightmare on Elm Street etc etc for proof. All of which became diluted form the original version and far more mainstream and/or kid friendly. Ultimately movie stuidios need to make money or there will be no further films, so that's why they go for the easy option.

Saw a trailer for this at the cinema - it is going to tank.
Same, and I can only hope you're right. It looked utterly dreadful. My biggest groan was imagining how clever someone thought they were when they completed the gender role reversals with the male receptionist.

The watered down sequel/franchise isn't new, but I think the amount is currently overwhelming. Less original stuff, and far more reboots/remakes/prequels/sequels. Various reasons I rckon, the budget stuff as mentioned, plus the people in power now wanna remake their fave films when they were a kid. Horrible idea since the 80s was stacked high with modern classics.
How many more ALien/SUperman/Terminator/Ghostbusters/Big Trouble/Back2theFuture/Raiders/Commando...fk...WARgames!!!

It's the relentless churning that is turning us off!

I think part of the problem isn't the gender role reversal per-se. It's the fact that the male characters who play opposite the strong, intelligent female team seem to be lame, weak, effeminate, incompetent. One guy even gets punched in the face by Kristen Wiig's character (yeh we all remember that hilarious scene in the original Ghostbusters where Venkman lays out a girl with one punch don't we......anyone....no?)

Can women only be portrayed as strong and independent if they are denigrating men in the process?

The female characters in the original Ghostbusters weren't portrayed in this manner. Both Dana and Janine were portrayed as intelligent, independent and despite taking some flak from the Venkman in particular - gave a lot of it back.

It's almost as if the director feels strong, intelligent and independent women wouldn't be able to hold their own if they had to share screen time with strong, intelligent men. If there is any sexism in all of this - that is where it lies.

It just looks amateurish. That bit in the clip looks like someone got their mates together to film some stuff then used it to put together an effects demo reel.

The effects aren't too bad if they were aiming for something about the same level as Scooby-doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. But the 'action' acting is absolutely rubbish.

Someone must really hate the original to have put so much effort and money into pissing on its memory.

I would love to be proven wrong and for it to be an awesome film, but the trailers don't fill me full of hope, it looks like really good special effects, but with crap jokes. Basically I'm expecting bridesmaids with ghosts and I didn't enjoy bridesmaids either despite the hype.

I think this too. But I'll be fked if I'm giving them any money, and I'm doubly fked if I'll contribute to the opening week revenues and give them even the slightest help in spinning it as not being a complete bomb.

I'll watch it on netflix in 6 months (more likely 3) so I can fast forward if it looks too unbearable.

I'm sure the film is going to be crap but there is no way I'm taking any sort of advice from that guy.

Sounds exactly as I expected. My memory fades but wasn't SW a strong intelligent character and wasn't the receptionist a sassy take no st intelligent woman in fact the assholes were men in that film.

LOL.

Reading the reddit threat it mentions there's a female Slimer (WTF!?). Apparently there was also a dance routine that was to be used in the main film but has been cut and is now in the closing credits.

As soon as I watched the trailer when we went to the cinema last month, I said it was gonna tank. I have zero desire to watch this.

As soon as I saw the trailers, it was a definite NO from me. It's worse than the Italian job, as at least that was a different plot.

I'll wait to it rocks up on the non rental channels.
A least then, I can turn it off without feeling that I have been robbed of decent cinema evening.

As a rule I don't mind fall out boy, they've done a few songs I really like. But that isn't great.
