You're both right. My mother always refused to watch anything he appeared in.

But so what?

That is a bit like saying Metallica only play rock music, or Dolly Parton only plays country music. Each have their genre and if they do that well then fair play to them.

There are few actors that can move between types, and isn't it better to be master of one rather than a jack of all trades?

Maybe, but when someone is a master of all trades, the results are epic. Im a big fan of Tom Hardy - love the way he is different in most of his films, not just in character, but in voice, and even physical size. Last film of his i saw was "Locke" - a soft spoken welsh man, miles away from roles like Bane, or the cage fighter in Warrior, or the hillbilly in Lawless.

It's just range. Some have a very varied range, like hardy and Depp, others have an extremely narrow range, like Cruise. Or a range of one, like Reeves.

John Wayne was good at what he did, and he knew it. He said he was good at being the cowboy, so why should he play the Indian (paraphrase).

But John Wayne wasn't actually a cowboy, was he? He played that part.

Dennis Waterman only plays Dennis Waterman. The only thing that changes is his name. And I bet he struggles with that.

Always plays the irish criminal. And even when he doesn't, he comes across as an irish criminal (ie him in Law Abiding citizen)
He'll always be Chief O'Brien to me!

The 'cowboy' was a trope, an extension of him. He tried to wriggle it onto a lot of things, like Genghis Khan. biggrin

He played a brooding American heavy in a US film. Also stage plays by the likes of Steinbeck. Song and dance man in Guys and Dolls too.

Can't believe nobody else has mentioned this; especially given his last 10 films:

Liam Neeson is only ever Liam Neeson and usually he has either lost or had something stolen.

His insurance quotes must be insane...
