It's be good to see him do some more development with it and go a season of Time Attack, especially as that was the original plan.

Some of the crashes they showed were bad. Especially the one where the car seemed to go tail over nose then do a few rolls for good measure.
That video is on YouTube and is a very good how not to pullover after a crash. All the cars behind were stopping and people running about on track with cars still coming round at pace IIRC.

There’s a few decent videos on Pro Alloy’s Facebook page. They had a private hire of the track for an hour, which probably explains why they only got one flying lap in given the problem.

Don't know the ins and outs of the times but I thoroughly enjoyed that.

I didn't think he would do it though, so was surprised when he broke it on the first lap so I suspect someone with proper ring knowledge, a few more laps under their belt and 80kg less ballast would destroy his time but it's not the point.
Sorry what was the point - not yours but the programmes ?

There isn't an official van record, if there is then it was in a fairly standard van.

Guy's van as it stood would have easily beaten it with a half decent driver.

Was the point that with enough money / power anyone can beat someone with far more skill but less power / money - because that's what it seemed to be.

I like Guy Martin but recently the programmes he's in, seem poorly thought out

The van only managed one lap. I’m sure it would’ve gotten closer to 9 minutes on successive laps. It would’ve gone faster if the brakes and suspension were developed and faster still with a ring expert at the wheel.

They probably used UHP road tyres as grippier tyres would’ve increased the risk of the van falling over if it spun or went up on two wheels over a kerb.

According to Dale (Bridge to Gantry), the tyres were Pilot cup 2's.

I wish there was a lot more footage on the customisation of the engine/suspension etc. Apparently copied the land rover dakar for the rear, and that gearbox/diff looked beefy.

Also, the engine is just a standard Radical V6 RXC engine, but would have been nice to have more information on why they chose that etc.

At the end of the run - with the van on fire, it appeared they stopped at a petrol station!
Correct me if I'm wrong though.

The fire extinguishers / fire brigade are in the same "complex" as the fuel pumps. So yes they did, but its where they're supposed to stop.

There must be some serious handling issues with the van as he did pretty much same lap time as me (some fat bloke) in my mums 15 year old Corolla with only 189 bhp when new and economy tyres. And that is a car that the collective petrolhead population say has dire handling!
He certainly had much more straightline pace as I never got the Corolla over 120 I think, let alone 144 mph
And yes I realise his was a full lap and mine was BTG but I was doing 9 min laps so add on 25-30 secs for the missing bit and we are right there.

Also they keep banging on about the van being 2+ton. the kerb weight for that size transit is I think about 1600kg and they had binned a load of it.

Man in heavily modified 700bhp mid engined van beats record set by man in 150bhp diesel rental van.

Shocking.
Dale’s van was 220hp.
My mistake. Then it was a fantastic achievement to beat the record with only a mere 480bhp more.
On the 1st lap wasn't it?

I'm guessing he'd have gone quicker with a few more laps had it not caught on fire!

And this piss poor preparation seems to be consistent in many of Guy's recent adventures, he's simply too busy to give these things the time they require.

I'm just glad it wasn't 3 spotty teenagers and their beardy professor doing the conversion. They did seem to skip over quite a lot. Suspension looked trick. But as normal, very little set up. Brake bias, adjustable shocks?

He wants to do all these things, have all these experiences and having a camera crew follow him round allows him the chance to do them. He then has to pander to them to an extent - cue the “entertainment” input from Tv people.

A show like this could have been a series in its own right - 4-5 weeks with in depth build, practice, prep etc but no - shoe horned into 47 mins and including the usual false jeopardy and tension-tastic elements.

It wasn't just money though, he built the van himself.

It did seem mad to me that they stopped right by the T13 pumps.

Dalmahoy, that "T13" pit (where the Nordschleife links to the GP circuit) is sometimes open during track days, so people can use the pit to stop (takes a little pressure off the Devils Diner car park) and also use the pumps to fill up.

That was covered in the first programme featuring the van.

Did he though? We saw him cut a hole in the floor for the engine, then the next time we saw it it had a full spaceframe with completely new rear suspension and a fancy Quiafe gearbox. Did he really design and fabricate that all by himself?
