Now, if any of you who have watched this series and enjoyed it, and guy, have never been to a road race.

Do so.

Nothing beats watching those boys on track. Nothing.

I'm a short circuit scratcher but the roads are nuts, a breed apart!
I keep meaning to get to one what site is best for a calender of races?
Generally it's best to just google individual events for Info, depends on what takes your fancy, time trial roads events like TT/Manx GP or mass start utter mentalism roads events like Southern 100, NW200, Oliver's Mount.

There seems to be a lot of engineers who have noticed flaws in the design. Can I nominate myself to be the PH team to tackle the speed maybe aim for 100mph. What about filling the chassis tubes with concrete?
Just running shrouded disc-type wheels and changing the suspension to a single faired in arm would probably get you there.
Agreed.

for me the obvious flaws were the design of the suspension (I call it that bit it looked like it was solid to me? no evidence of spring/dampers/anything), the wheelbase was too short, COG way too high up, and as said, the weight balance was plain wrong.

if you were only going in a straight line, then some of this is excusable, but looking at that road, some consideration to ride and handling would not have gone amiss.

Other point was the brakes, having sourced great brakes, then to spend no time testing/setting the balance or then considering the effects of these brakes on the spoked wheels (as in the distorsion of the wheel when brake torque was applied) seems somewhat foolhardy.

Yes I know it's only TV, but what I take away from this is Sheffield Hallam's engineering dept are chronically under-brained.

the Carbon work was mega, but let down by bad primary design.

when you consider the money and resources used on this project, it's all a bit disappointing from an engineering perspective.

Look, I like the programme, and Guy comes across as a good egg etc, but if for one moment you take him out of the programme, what you are left with is sadly lacking.

It did appear that the rear wheels would lock under hard braking.

Maybe non-linked brakes with levers on the wheel/yoke or plumbing in a bias adjuster might have been better with them changing the weights.

We don't know what was done off-camera though.

I would have thought that the ground clearance/ride height could have been reduced significantly, with Guy sat much lower wrt the wheels.

It had a bias adjuster. They had the guy from Hope explain it to Guy on the show.

Some of you really need a life. Just enjoy the easy Sunday night TV.
You chaps seem to think that television should be consumed, slack-jawed, brain off, without discussion or comment.

Do you have the same attitude in other discussion threads on other television events?

Formula 1:
"Oh! Hamilton outbraked himself and ran wide. That could cost him the chance of challenging for the lead"
"Moan moan moan. I bet you couldn't drive as well as Hamilton. Are you some kind of driving expert? Just enjoy the race, FFS. Get a life"

Strictly Come Dancing:
"Those mistakes are going to cost her dearly with the judges. Anyone else reckon she could even be in the dance off tomorrow?"
"Are you a dance expert? I bet you couldn't dance as well as that. Stop picking it to pieces and just enjoy the show."

What is the point of a discussion thread if not for discussion? If all we are allowed to do in a thread is to say "I enjoyed that. Good wasn't it?" (and people are only allowed to reply "yes, it was" with no dissent or qualification), then it would be a very short and dull thread.

Personally, I find people like you guys criticising the discussion to be infinitely more tedious and moaney than the people having the discussion. Get a life. wink

A lot of people think that life should be consumed in a similar way, hence the huge number of never set-up-correctly vehicles, computers, kitchen appliances etc. and the popularity of religions such as UKIP...

There are those that like to "Get under the hood" as Americans say, and those that don't.

I found myself watching a show called Gogglebox the other night. You watch people who are watching telly.

Then I come onto Pistonheads and find myself reading about people who have watched a tv show.

My life is empty eek

Erm, anyway. I thoroughly enjoyed this weeks episode, I suspect far more went on with the design and build of the gravity racer than it seems given the ridiculous speed it reached in the end.

The record he set must be able to be beaten quite easily if you had enough cash and giant balls to try something like this but in a suitably designed gravity racer?

I bet he had a damned good go wink

I thought it was good how his team were all young women, they probably saved themselves a fortune in costs, but it made it much more entertaining to be giving them a go rather than wheeling in some expensive F1 designer or whatever.

Excellent finale for the series - job jobbed.

If we're being picky - why carbon fibre? Weight was added, so the hovercraft man might have been an appropriate panel builder for this?

Makes you think though - glorified go-kart, big enough hill, confidence in the safety cell, just roll on down and Robert is a close relative of your parents...where do I sign up?

2 reasons, one is that you make something as light as poss then add in weight where you want it to be to make the thing handle/go/stop/meet weight regs.

The other is that you don't want any weight high up, consider C of G, things become unstable and topple over.....

The water weight would perhaps have been better slung under the chassis closer to the ground if time and design would have permitted.

using water as ballast is a really bad idea for several reasons, and even worse in this case it was just randomly stuffed in loose where it would fit.

No consideration to the overall weight and the effects this would have on the wheels that were simply not designed for these kind of loads.

imagine in the guys doing Bloodhound were this tardy?

The record they were trying to beat was set on an open public road by one man, in his own self-made cart, who managed not to crash it. Pretty sure if you got him out on a steeper road and closed it etc, he would set the bar somewhat higher.

I don't think there's anything wrong with discussing the finer points of the programme, but people seem to forget it's a TV show. The programmes don't go into anywhere near enough detail on the design of the machines themselves to open a detailed discussion on the pros and cons of each design. I just have this image of an armchair expert pausing the telly every 30secs to inspect the picture and make notes of what they think is wrong, rather than concentrating on the achievements, which are genuine. We're all different I guess, but I wouldn't want to get stuck talking to one of them in a lift!

Various of the armchair experts work in related fields of engineering in their day-jobs.

Engineering designs aren't handed down by the gods.

Only on PH could a few comments made about a program on Ch4 be spun into assumptions about people's entire lives!
